Algebraic Word Problem
Problem
Vivian and Noelle both leave the park at the same time, but in opposite directions.
If Noelle travels 5 mph faster than Vivian and after 8 hours, they are 136 miles
apart, how fast in mile per hour is each traveling?
What is asked?
How fast in mile per hour is each traveling?
What is given?
8 hours as time taken to travel.
136 miles as Vivian and Noelle’s total distance travelled in 8 hours.
Solution:
Let’s represent Vivian’s speed as “x”, while “x+5” as Noelle’s speed.
(We put +5 to x as a representative of Noelle’s speed, because she travels
“5 mph faster” than Vivian.)
We all know that when we multiplied speed by time, that is equal to distance.
(Speed x Time = Distance)
Therefore,
8x = distance Vivian travelled in 8 hours.
8(x + 5) = distance Noelle travelled in 8 hours.
With that, we can now form an equation.
8x + 8(x+5) = 136 (Vivian and Noelle’s total distance travelled in 8 hours.)
8x + 8x + 40 = 136
We’re able to get 8x + 40 because we multiplied 8 to x+5. So 8 multiplied by x is equal
to 8x and 8 multiplied by 5 is 40.
16x + 40 = 136
We’re able to get 16x by adding 8x to 8x.
16x + 40 = 136 – 40
Transpose the constant number to the other side of the equation and change the sign. If
the sign of the constant number is positive (+) then, change it into negative (-) when you
transpose it to other side of the equation. And if the sign of the constant number is
negative (-), then change it into positive (+) when you transpose it to other side of the
equation.
16x = 96
16 x 96
=
16 16
Divide both side of the equation by the coefficient of the variable.
x = 6 mile per hour
x + 5 6 + 5 = 11 mile per hour
