1.0 INTRODUCTION
Most of the countries nowadays have their own plan, vision and mission to become
successful in every aspect. To raise their own prosperity, they have well-planned their
strategies to strengthen the economy. Globalization is one of the way that most of the
countries can develop better economy. Due to globalization, developing countries have
chance to participate in emerging their countries as it allows businesses in less industrialized
countries to become part of international networks in construction industry.

2.0 PROJECT BACKGROUND
The Green Building Index (GBI) is Malaysia’s industry recognised green rating tool for
buildings to promote sustainability in the built environment and raise awareness among
Developers, Architects, Engineers, Planners, Designers, Contractors and the Public about
environmental issues and our responsibility to the future generations. The GBI rating tool
provides an opportunity for developers and building owners to design and construct green,
sustainable buildings that can provide energy savings, water savings, a healthier indoor
environment, better connectivity to public transport and the adoption of recycling and
greenery for their projects and reduce our impact on the environment.

3.0 PRACTICAL SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES
To start a construction of sport arena in near a university and surrounded by housing
area, there are several things that need to be prioritize in order to achieve the goal of the
project. There are many goal need to be achieved whether it is for human aspect, nature or
education. For example, the building provides gender equality which means the usage of the
building is open for all genders but there must be a separation between the genders to
prevent sexual repression. Furthermore, the life on land and below water need to be taken
as serious issues. This animal is important to realizing biodiversity conservation. Biodiversity
conservation is about saving life on earth in all its forms and keeping natural ecosystems
functioning and healthy. Quality education also can be produced in constructing sport arena.
The education related to the safety during exercise being the most important learning to the
users especially the students that eager to do exercise regularly with their fellow friends.
In achieving the goal of the project, there are five main principles of sustainable
development. The first one is living within environmental limits. It is human action in
respecting the limits of the planet’s environment, resources and biodiversity. This first
principle is important to improve our environment and ensure that the natural resources
needed for life are unimpaired and remain so for future generations. The second principle is
achieving a sustainable economy. Decisive action can be done by penalize anyone that do
mistakes on purpose in which environmental and social costs fall on those who impose them
(polluter pays). Building a strong, stable and sustainable economy is needed to provides
prosperity and opportunities for all and efficient resource use is incentivised. The third
principle is promoting good governance. This principle important to ensure community
unification of various races in Malaysia. Due to need of harmony living, actively promoting
effective, participative systems of governance in all levels of society is needed to engaging
people’s creativity, energy and
4
diversity. The fourth principle is using sound science responsibly. Authorities need to
ensuring the policy is developed and implemented on the basis of strong scientific evidence,
whilst taking into account scientific uncertainty (through the precautionary principle) as well
as public attitudes and values. The last principle is ensuring a strong, healthy and just
society. This last principle plays important role in meeting the diverse needs of all people in
existing and future communities, promoting personal wellbeing, social cohesion and
inclusion and creating equal opportunity.
During construction, the green element be the priority. Nowadays, the percentage of
trees decreases each year. Thus, intensive care on the surrounding condition of the site is a
must. Even though the building is not for the nature purpose; engineer should include the
green element in constructing the building. For example, in constructing a stadium engineer
can use the green element as decoration for the stadium. This will create green building in
construction industry. Pollution during a construction activity can be avoid by the workers
itself. Critical thinking of engineer in protecting
5
nature is a must. Sometimes small things really matter in construction. For example,
engineer should consider the transportation mode to transport the material to the site with
less polluted way.
Material selection is another way to conserve nature. The use of material produces locally
reduce the time travel to the site which means it has decrease the emission of carbon
monoxide during travel. Material produce locally also saving cost contribute to the
construction. Consultant is responsible for selecting the material that will be used during
construction. Then, the quantity surveyor will provide the quantity of the material with their
total cost. Huge building such as stadium, material selection for this type of building are
important because safety is the main target followed by the cost of the material. Besides,
material with less toxic also is a good choice to be used in construction. Toxic material used
such as mercury will affect the surrounding environment especially the nature.
6
Sustainable construction includes the way to handle the waste. Recycling is the one of
method that can be done. There is several importance of recycling, among them is reduce the
demand for new resources, cuts down the effort of transport, and use waste which would
otherwise be lost to landfill sites. Unfortunately, there is a barrier for this effort to be done. The
barriers are lack of appropriate located recycling facilities, absence of appropriate technology
and lack of awareness between the workers. Supposedly, the engineer should think a better
way and provide recycling facilities so that the material that recycled can be used in the future.
When considering a recyclable material, three major areas need to be taken in to account. The
three major areas are economy, compatibility with other materials and material properties.
Finally, sustainable construction includes building and material reuse. Reuse is here
used as a general term for any kind of reuse and divided into recirculation, upgrading and
cascading, according to the degradation of the inner material structure. Reuse of construction
materials in society is mainly done with the belief that any kind of reuse is environmentally
beneficial. However, this assumption is seldom critically assessed. During a construction,
there must be extra material left after the construction are finished. The excess of materials,
facility, systems, equipment and products can be reuse for the next construction. Reuse of
material will help in lowering the cost in next construction project.

4.0 SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES
The ability to maintain at certain rate or level is what we call sustainability. By that, in the
process of attaining sustainability does not mean to eradicate the adverse impact, which is an
impossible vision at present, but rather the reduction of it to a certain reasonable level. Since
1987, the idea we called ‘sustainable development’ was introduced on which we need to
maintain a delicate balance between the human need to improve lifestyles and feeling of
well-being on one hand and preserving natural resources and ecosystems on which we and
the future generations depend. We need sustainable development as to alter or improve our
conventional way of development into a more responsible approach which can satisfy our
needs for development without harming the world we live in. Hence, the concept of
sustainable construction is applied when we start constructing another building and this was
the responsibility of the construction industry to attain sustainability. The concept of
sustainability must be applied into construction industry to influence the manner in which a
project shall be conducted to strike a balance between conserving the environment and
maintaining prosperity in development.
8
Under site and environment strategy, engineers must identify the methods to reduce the
environmental impact of construction on the project site and surrounding environment. For
example, there was a mass usage of trucks to deliver the building materials to the
construction site. This had contributed to the emission of harmful gas such as carbon
monoxide. It will be wise if the part was transport to the site using railway instead of trucks.
There will be 54 to 67% reduction in the emission of carbon monoxide if we could avoid 90%
or more truck kilometers. In the America, Freight Rail & Construction transport lumber and
other construction material via railway. This greatly increase their efficiency and help deliver
the materials customers need at a price that keep them competitive because train surely can
transport more loads than a dozens of trucks combined.
Lastly, building and material reuse where engineers identifies reusable materials and
methods to facilitate the future reuse of a facility, systems, equipment, products and
materials. Many materials can be salvaged from demolition and renovation sites and sold,
donated, stored for later use or reused on the current project. The typical materials suitable
for reuse including plumbing fixtures, brick, ceiling, floor tiles and wood. Typically, there will
be abundance of construction materials after demolition or renovation. If the salvage
materials mainly compose of wood and timber product, it can be benefit by making tree
house for kids. Perhaps, chicken breeder also can make chicken den from salvage woods
and roof tiles. Other than that, concrete can be broken down and reused as base course for
building driveways and footpaths. Untreated timber can be reused as firewood or mulched
while large pieces can be re-milled and put back to use in construction. Asphalt paving when
crushed, can be use back into new asphalt for paved roads. This, can cut down the
construction cost and salvage materials will not end up in landfills.
10
5.0 SUSTAINABLE GUIDELINES
This is the most important thing to endure because before construction can be
proceeded the site should be investigated first either it is suitable and will not harm the
biodiversity inside it. The developers should try to ensure that their proposal of construction
will enhance the biodiversity of the site and surrounding area, by considering the issues
raised by the ecological assessment and implementing positive action wherever possible. An
ecological survey should be taken as part of an initial site assessment. The survey should
consider the damage to wildlife habitats during the construction process can be minimized
and existing natural landscape features such as pond, trees and hedges could be retained
and integrated into overall design.
5.2 Maximize the use of materials from local and sustainable resources.
11
preferable to highly process material such as plastics. Use of locally sourced material such
as local stone helps to maintain local character and reduce transport impact. Longevity and
low maintenance are highly desirable qualities.
By creating space within the structure for the safe storage of waste for recycling,
developers can make the option of recycling easier for residents and staff plus to assist the
collection of materials by waste contractors. So, for new developments, space should be
provided for storing recycle bins. This space should sufficient to allow separate storage for
different types of wastes. Other than that, the redevelopment of brownfield sites usually
leads to the production of quantities of demolition waste. In addition, excavations for
foundations and landscaping can result in the production of waste soils. These are potentially
valuable materials. By reusing these materials developers can reduce their environmental
impact and can also save on the now significant costs of landfill.
5.4 Minimize pollutants emissions to water, air and soil and minimize noise and
light pollutions.
12
6.0 PROJECT IMPLICATION
Exploratory study on sport, social change and the environment has been extensive
and has gone in many different directions, as illustrated in the sections below. First, we
highlight the various ways sport was used as an instrument for positive social change. Then,
we look at the current strategies of sports organizations involved in environmental initiatives.
As this review will show, sport organizations are uniquely positioned to bring about change;
however, when it comes to environmental issues, it remains unclear whether teams are
engaged in green building as a response to existing social pressure or to catalyse a new
wave of environmental stewardship.
In 2005, FIFA released an article called "Football for Hope: Football 's Commitment
to Social Development," in which the association made clear its commitment to creating a
concrete connection between development and sport (FIFA,2014). However, a community
striving for a sustainable future within the defined functional system possesses a holistic
understanding of its social and ecological constraints, thus creating awareness of its effects
on the natural environment along with the effects of other communities. Sports have always
had a place in society, with their effect and influence. A lot of instrumental learning goals and
lessons can be achieved by sport. Sometimes their value is underestimated, but as anyone
knows who ever attended any sporting event, it can literally reshape a community's
foundation.
The link between sport and environmental consciousness dates back to the 1994
Lillehammer Olympic Games where, for the first time, close attention was paid to the
development of sports facilities and their effect on the environment (Trendafilova, Bemiller, &
Hardin, 2012). Sporting venues and stadium arenas are implementing ground breaking green
initiatives to promote the sustainability of sport and the environment. The impact of
environmentally friendly sports arena if we use of green building materials results in a lower
level of waste and environmental pollution. Today, many stadiums are constructed using
recycled materials, such as paper and plastics. Next, reduced health risk to the environment
because building with toxin-free products decreases the possibility of potential health issues
like asthma and cancer. Green stadiums also undergo a commissioning process that
reduces other safety hazards, such as fire.
Building sports arena affects local economies. Regardless of this, many people favor
using government funding to help pay for stadiums. Economists, however, generally object
to such subsidies. They also emphasize that estimates of the economic effects of sports
arena are underestimated by failing to consider the cost of opportunity. Consumers who
spend money on sporting events are likely to spend the money on other types of
entertainment which have similar
13
economic effects. Rather of subsidizing sports stadiums, governments should finance other
initiatives such as roads or education that could improve productivity and encourage economic
development.
7.0 CONCLUSION
Sustainable development may influence in the cost reduction where the green
building costs are less than a normal building due to the few resources required in
completing project. Also, it can improve healthy by minimizing waste with their lower
environment impact as well as protect the environment through recycle materials that
contributing significantly to the protection of environment and reduction waste which
therefore the good quality of life. Furthermore, this concept van develops good time
management for the project completion with the usage of Industrialized Building System
(IBS).
