Learning Report:

I’ve learned many things from the previous lessons that was discussed by the third group
group. I’ve learned that there are two types of thoughts in the self regarding to place which is the
Eastern and the Western thoughts. Western thoughts is conducted scientific investigations in the
effort to understand the self and have developed theories and deifferences among them. They
emphasized the importance of scientific methods of investigations. The emphasis is
individualistic rather than relational. On the other hand, Eastern thoughts raise questions about
the ultimate meaning of human life, develops theories of self as they have investigated what it
means to be a human being, and the emphasis is relational rather than the individual.
There are three types of the self on Eastern thought: Confucianism, Taoism, and
Buddhism. Firstly, Confucianism can be seen as a code of ethical conduct of how one should
properly act according to their relationship with other people. Secondly, Taoism is a religion or a
philosophy from Ancient China. It can be defined as the source, pattern, or the substance of
everything that exists. The self is just an extension of the family or community. Lastly, in
Buddhism the self is seen as an illusion, born out of ignorance of trying to hold and control
things, or human centred needs. The self is also the source of sufferings. The ideal is to
experience Nirvana, a state of transcendence devoid of self-reference.
The Western thought talks more about the personal attributes when describing
themselves. The western culture is what we call the Individualistic culture, while the Asian
culture is the collectivistic culture. Westerners emphasize more on the value of equality even if
they see that the individual can rise above everything else.
