1 Release Notes
June 2021

Welcome to the SAFe Advanced Scrum Master (SASM) 5.1 course!

In the spirit of relentless improvement, we regularly update and maintain our courses.
This document contains the updates for this version of the course.

General Course Improvements


• Added slide numbering to the lower right corner for slide location reference. This
allows the trainer to reference a slide to the learners easily and also for
reference when submitting feedback.
• Added a SAFe Advanced Scrum Master Virtual Classroom option complete with
28 class activities sequenced for course delivery located in SAFe Collaborate.
• Added Classroom and Group Remote Document Template PowerPoint files to
the Courseware Kit to support remote delivery for trainers unable to utilize the
SAFe Collaborate Virtual Classroom.
• General course improvements include updated graphics, redesigned PowerPoint
layouts, and corrected typos, grammar, and punctuation.
• All content has also been aligned with changes made to the Scaled Agile
Framework Big Picture 5.1.
• Added a new lesson topics slide in each lesson so it can be decoupled from
lesson objectives. Lesson topics are now used for the section headings.
• Lesson objectives have been refactored so that they are more realistic and
measurable.
• Improved formatting applied to the trainer notes and additional trainer notes
added for all key slides.
• Increased timing on selected activities based on feedback and to better support
remote training.
• Reinstated the recommended reading and SAFe Big Picture on the lesson review
slides.
• Added new pages to the student workbook to support selected activities. These
new pages have been formatted to ensure use both digitally and with physical
workbooks.
• Added new slides throughout the course to highlight resources available on the
SAFe Community Platform to help Scrum Masters succeed in their role.

Lesson 1 (Exploring the Scrum Master Role in SAFe)

• Updated the Discussion: Enable team growth for whole class facilitation with a
7-minute total timebox.

• Added slide 1-10 to introduce new Iteration event Facilitator Guides available on
the SAFe Community Platform.
• Reduced the amount of content in The Seven Core Competencies of Business
Agility topic. Each Core Competency now has a single overview slide, with the
more detailed slides moved to the beginning of the relevant lessons.

Lesson 2 (Applying SAFe Principles)

• Slide 2-45 added video: Formula 1 Pit Stops: 1950 and Today.

Lesson 3 (Exploring Agile and Anti-Scrum Patterns)

• Added slide 3-16 to introduce SAFe Community Platform resources to help

• Added slide 3-21 to introduce additional SAFe Community Platform
resources Scrum Masters can use to avoid and overcome common anti-
patterns.

Lesson 4 (Facilitating Program Execution)

• Replaced lesson slide Organizing teams around value, with Teams on the ART
are organized for flow and the supporting SAFe Advanced Topic Article for Team

• Replaced lesson slide Finding the right tradeoff: Feature and component teams

Community Platform to help Scrum Masters prepare for PI Planning.

Lesson 5 (Improving Flow with Kanban and XP)

Encourage learners to view the video 2 (Implementing Kanban for a Team on a

teams.

• Inserted additional slides to prepare for the cumulative flow diagram activity.
• Added slide 5-48 with additional SAFe Community Platform resources to help Scrum
Masters support flow, use metrics, and facilitate events.
