Activity # 3: Issues On Human Development

This document contains a student's responses to an activity on issues in human development. The student addresses three topics: (1) the interaction of nature and nurture in development, responding that both play significant roles; (2) whether development involves continuity or discontinuity, likening it more to the metamorphosis of a caterpillar; and (3) whether development involves stability or change, asserting that development primarily involves changes rather than stability as people grow into individuals different than their younger selves.

Issues on Human Development

1. Explain what this quote means - " The interaction of heredity and environment is so extensive that to
ask which is more important -  nature or nurture, is likely asking which is more important to a rectangle
- height or width'? - William Greenough
Nature and Nurture are both important. We are a product of these two so it is just a rectangle that
you cannot make a rectangle without height and width
2. Issues on Human Development:
a,  Nature vs, Nurture
Which has a more significant influence on human development - Nature or Nurture? Nature refers to an
individual's inheritance.  Nurture refers to environmental experiences.
For me, nature and nurture are both significant and I can't say that nature and nurture are just
because we are the product of these two. Because our nature as human beings we have inherited
from our parents and ancestors and nurture is influenced by external factors such as environment,
peers, friends and social media.
b, Continuity vs, Discontinuity
Does development involve gradual, cumulative change { continuity} or distinct changes { discontinuity}?
To make it more concrete, here is a question - Is our development like that of a seedling gradually
growing into an acacia tree? Or is it more like that of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly?

For me I can compare it more like that of a caterpillar becoming a butterfly. Because we
grow continuously as we live and as we grow our perspective and even our physicality
change. There is a process for our growth.
c, Stability vs, Change
Is development best described as involving stability or as involving change? Are we what our first
experiences have made of us or do we develop into someone different from who we were at an earlier
point in development?
Stability vs. Change. For me Development is more involving changes,Because we grow up,and
not everything can maintain. It is possible only in the appearance of our parents or the talent that
we inherited from our parents. But our Development as an individual is all changing physically,
emotionally and all aspects of our lives. We can grow to be better or to be worse. That depends
on each individual because we have our own will to decide
