Traffic Volume Study

This document is a laboratory report summarizing a traffic volume study conducted by a group of civil engineering students. The study was conducted at the main entrance of Politeknik Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah facing UNIKL to count the number and types of vehicles passing through from 4:40pm to 5:30pm. The results found that the majority of vehicles were cars and motorcycles, with the highest traffic volume occurring between 5:00pm to 5:30pm. The report concludes that traffic volume studies are important for transportation planning, design, and operations.

TRAFFIC VOLUME STUDY

I. INTRODUCTION
Transportation system is a dynamic system. Information about
traffic must be regularly updated to keep pace with ever-changing
transportation system. Data must be collected and analyzed
systematically to get representative information. Traffic surveys are
the means of obtaining information about traffic. This is a systematic
way of collecting data to be used for various traffic engineering
purposes. The main purposes of traffic survey are: traffic monitoring,
traffic control and management, traffic enforcement, traffic
forecasting, model calibration and validating etc.
The term traffic volume study can be termed as traffic flow survey or
simply the traffic survey. It is defined as the procedure to determine
mainly volume of traffic moving on the roads at a particular section
during a particular time. It is measured in vehicle per minute, vehicle
per hour and vehicle per day. In order to express the traffic flow on a
road per unit time, it is necessary to convert the flow of the different
vehicle classes into a standard vehicle class known as passenger car
unit. The traffic volume is dynamic and varies during 24 hours of the
day. Daily traffic volume varies on different days of a week and
different months and seasons of the years.
Traffic data are needed in research, planning, designing and
regulation phases of traffic engineering and are also used
in established priorities and schedules of traffic improvements. The
traffic engineer must acquire general knowledge of traffic
volume characteristics in or der to measure and understand the
magnitude, composition, and time and route distribution of volume for
each area under his jurisdiction.

II. OBJECTIVE
 To determine of vehicles composition in traffic flow stream
 To determine the service flow rate in PCU unit
 To estimate hourly volume

 The site choosen make sure that was not dangerous and does
not interfere with existing traffic (T junction or Four leg junction).
 Necessary preparations such as sufficient pens, field data forms
and clipboards, safety vest
 and others.
 Must Arrived 30 minutes earlier at the site in order to familiarize
with locations.

2. Collect Field Data

 Proper observer’s position was very important, so they can see
clearly, safely and easily count a traffic.
 Record observations on the field form.

TRAFFIC VOLUME STUDY

VII. DISCUSSION
A traffic volume study was conducted to count the number of vehicles
passing through a particular reference point on a road section within a
specified time period. We were at the main entrance of Politeknik
Tuanku Sultanah Bahiyah (PTSB) facing UNIKL. Around 4:40 pm, we
were on the side of the road for collect traffic volume data. The data
taken was from vehicles heading to Jalan Serdang or to Kilang Lama.
Study show that the number of each type of vehicle passing from the
direction heading to Jalan Sedang, in every 5 minutes in the time
from 4.40 pm to 5.30 pm and at that 1 hour, the number of vehicles
taken, the decision for peak time for the road can be taken. A traffic
volume study was conducted to count the number of vehicles passing
through a particular reference point on a road section in a given
period of time.
Throughout the observation, the traffic volume increased from 5:00
pm to 5.30 pm Meanwhile, the traffic volume decreased from 4:40 pm
to 4:50 pm. The direction of vehicles towards Jalan Serdang was
recorded as the highest number of vehicles passing through selected
locations. The total number of vehicles that passed through the
Lebuhraya Perdana in 1 hour of the study was 648 vehicles.

VIII.CONCLUSION

MONEESHA SRI GOBINATHAN 9

TRAFFIC VOLUME STUDY

The traffic volume study was very important as the purpose of

conducting traffic volume study was to be used and needed in
planning, designing and operation of the transportation system. Not
only that, the traffic data also were used for planning purposes where
accurate information on the amount of traffic on the roads was very
important for the planning of both road maintenance and
improvement policies. Other than that, the traffic data was needed for
design purposes which in order to design the structural and
geometrical as the geometric design for based on peak hour volume
to avoid congestion.
As a conclusion, we were done collected data around 5:30 pm. Based
on the experiment, show that the total of car/taxi that was more than
the other vehicles. From this experiment, the importance of traffic
volume is to know the number of vehicles passing at a given time.
