Assignment

The mean life of batteries from a sample of 20 modified batteries was tested against the original mean battery life of 305 days. The modified batteries had a mean life of 311 days with a standard deviation of 12 days. Using a t-test, the null hypothesis that the modification did not increase battery life was tested against the alternative that it did increase battery life. The calculated t value of 2.24 was greater than the critical value of 1.729, so the null hypothesis was rejected, indicating that the modification likely increased the mean battery life.

1. The mean life of a battery used in a digital clock is 305 days.

The lives of the batteries

follow the normal distribution. The battery was recently modified to last longer. A
sample of 20 of the modified batteries had a mean life of 311 days with a standard
deviation of 12 days. Did the modification increase the mean life of the battery?

(a) State the null hypothesis and the alternate hypothesis.

Answer: 𝑯𝟎 ∶ 𝝁 ≤ 3𝟎5

: 𝝁 ˃ 3𝟎5

(b) What is the decision rule.

Answer:

degree of freedom= DF=n-1= 20-1=19

α = 0.05

Critical Value = 1.729 [T-table]

The decision rule at α = 0.05 level

If calculated value ˃ Critical Value, reject null hypothesis.

(c) Compute the value of t. What is your decision regarding the null hypothesis?

Answer:

μ= 305 x̅= 311, s= 12, n=20

x́−µ
t=
s/√n
311−305
= 12/ √20
= 2.24
The null hypothesis H0 reject.
