Vaigai College of Engineering Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Tutorial Problems - I

This document contains 9 problems related to DC generators. Problem 1 asks to determine the armature current, induced EMF, and flux per pole for a 10 pole DC shunt generator running at 1000 rpm with a specified load, terminal voltage, armature resistance, and field resistance. Problem 2 asks to calculate the terminal voltage for a 4 pole lap wound DC shunt generator running at 1000 rpm with a specified armature current, useful flux per pole, number of turns, and turn resistance. Problem 3 asks to find the useful flux per pole for a 6 pole wave connected DC armature running at 1200 rpm with a specified number of conductors and generated EMF.

Tutorial Problems – I
1) A 10 pole DC shunt generator with 800 wave connected conductor are
running at 1000 rpm supplies a load of 20 ohm resistance at a terminal
voltage of 240V. The armature resistance is 0.28 ohm and field resistance is
240 ohm. Determine the armature current, induced emf and flux per pole
2) A 4 pole lap wound DC shunt generator has a useful flux per pole is
0.6wb. The armature winding consists of 200 turns, each turn having a
resistance of 0.003 ohm. Calculate the terminal voltage when running at
1000rpm, if armature current is 45 Amps
3) A 6 pole, wave connected DC armature has 300 conductor and runs at
1200 rpm. The emf generated is 600V. Find the useful flux per pole
4) The lap wound armature of a 4 pole generator armature has 31 slots.
Each slot contains 20 conductor. What will be the emf generated in machine
when driven at 1500 rpm if useful flux per pole is 0.01wb
5) A 4 pole lap wound DC shunt generator has a useful flux per pole is
0.06wb. The armature winding consists of 200 turns each turn having a
resistance of 3milliohm. Calculate the terminal voltage when running at
1000rpm. If armature current is 45 Amps

and 0.06 ohm respectively. Find the induced emf and armature current
when the machine is connected in (i) short shunt (ii) long shunt
7) A 1500KW, 600V, 6 pole separately excited DC generator runs at 200
rpm. Its armature resistance is 0.04 ohm, calculate useful flux per pole
2500 armature conductors are lap connected
8) A DC shunt generator has an induced voltage on open circuit of 127V.
