The key takeaways are that reader's theatre involves minimal costumes, props and movement with an emphasis on fluent reading of roles. It also aims to teach about bullying and how to deal with it.

Some characteristics of reader's theatre are that it is not a play, has a limited number of readers who may take on various roles, includes some individual and some choral reading, and traditionally uses small binders for scripts.

Some examples of bullying behaviors mentioned are name calling, teasing, threatening, intimidating, taking or destroying other's belongings, and physical acts like kicking, hitting or pinching.

The Genre of Reader’s Theatre

• Reader’s theatre is not a play. The script is limited to 4 to 6
readers. Each reader may read various roles or characters in the
script. Some parts are read individually while others are read
chorally. Classroom scripts may or may not include whole class
parts.
• Traditionally, reader’s theatre scripts are placed in small black
binders. Each reader holds their binder open in one hand, and
turns the pages with their other hand.
• Costumes are minimal. Readers may choose to dress similar
(all black, or jeans and a white t-shirt). They may occassionally
use hats to differentiate character roles.
• Props are extremely minimal. The use of stools in reader’s
theatre is appropriate.
• Movement is minimal, although readers may change positions
(moving forward, back, over).
• Readers should read the script with fluency, expression, and
character voices.
