Activity 1
1.0 Introduction
The determination of this report is to offer specifics on the community service project that was
carried out at my mother’s house. This idea was convincing as the value of parents is an essential
aspect to be emphasized in our community. Furthermore, parents are very special as they have
contributed and sacrificed a lot for us since infancy. Moreover, it is also one of our fundamental
accountabilities to show them love and care. It is a question mark if we can pay back our most
deserving parents for all that they have done for us just by showering them with love and providing
materialistic things. However, the effort that we take to give them contentment matters. Hence, I
decided to implement this concept by carrying out an impactful community service project at my
mother’s house who is a widow.
This paragraph will provide a bit enlightenment about community service. Social work is carried
out by a working group with adequate number of people in order to achieve objectives and purpose
of the service as well as to create an impact in the community. Usually, community services are
volunteer-based and they are accomplished quickly upon high readiness and availability of volunteers
or social workers. Generally, this genuine work does not only cultivate to apply prior knowledge, but
also enhances skills of civic values and practices of each individual to support in the form of energy
and skills to the community and nation. The essence of social responsibility or social service is to show
a sense of care and love of one individual or any corporate agency to render help in solving people's
problems and needs.
1.1 Planning of social work

We planned to do housekeeping and embellish my mother’s place (indoor activity). Considering
the Malaysian Movement Control Order (MCO) that is being enforced till date, OUM work instructions
which obey social distancing and all precautionary measures against the prevention of (COVID-19)
was implied throughout this project work. This activity was carried out indoor and it was limited to my
family members only. The intention of this program was to help those in need with a message that
they are not forgotten by anyone.
1.2 Name of the community service

“Carrying Pleasure to Parents” was the name of the activity. The name was given to supplement the
purpose of the project which was to give moments of joy and cheer to our parents and highlight the
fact that parents should be appreciated and loved eternally.
1.2.1 Slogan
Our preferred slogan for this activity: “I Care! I am Aware!”. The reason for making this theme was to
emphasize the fact that parents should be appreciated, cared, and never obliviated.
1.2.2 Date
The project was carried out on Sunday, 2 ndAugust 2020. The reason of selecting Sunday is because it
was a non-working day for my wife and children who joined the activity.
1.2.3 Time
The time of this project execution was from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm, a duration of 4 hours.
1.2.4 Venue
The venue of the project is at my mother’s house which is located at 31, Jalan Anggerik 2G, Prima
Beruntung, 48300 Rawang, Selangor.
1.3 Committee member involved

A total number of five volunteers who are my wife, Sarojini Krishnan and my children, Thinnesh
Muniandy, Prasanth Muniandy and Shahmini Muniandy.
1.4 Activity assigned to family members (table 1)

ICE BREAKING
Toolbox talk perform to all member who participated, team leader briefly elaborates each assigned
activity for members attention. Members and facilitators get to toolbox discussion

1.5 Objectives of this activity

The main objective of this project was to give happiness to my parent by spending our time with
her. Arrangements were purely made to provide contentment for my old parent by achieving the
objective. Together, we improved the cleanliness and embellished the house. That experience
inspired us and created awareness among volunteers on the need to appreciate parents. Therefore,
social responsibility is to gain social skills experience and all family members gained more experiences
and awareness through this event. That experience would be a valuable memory to cherish forever
and also helped to build the confidence in ourselves. Members also found that volunteering projects
are fun and stress-free. Thus, they will not hesitate to contribute in other social works in future.
1.6 Description of before and during the implementation of the activities

Open University Malaysia (OUM) needs all students to do community service activity as a part of
my degree requirement. Accordingly, the preparation of this project had started at mid of July’20.
Due to Pandemic Covid19 crisis, outdoors activities were forbidden. Only small group activities with
family member were allowed. As a result, my own mother’s home was identified as the venue this
project.
On, Sunday, 2nd August 2020, my team members made the trip to my mother’s house at 7.30 a.m.
Upon arrival at the venue, a short toolbox was carried-out followed by simple exercises. Then, a light
breakfast was taken, followed by the rest of the activities. After the work was done, then, an
appreciation ceremony was held.

1.7 Appreciation
My sincere thanks and appreciation to my parent for giving us the opportunity to implement the
project and not forgetting my team members who have given me full cooperation and support in
steering this welfare service and worked together for the achievement of this activity. With this
occasion, I would like to extend my gratitude to OUM management for giving me a great opportunity
to play my part in this project. Certainly, this community service project was an eye opener for me
and to my team. Essentially, we learnt a valuable lesson on the importance of looking after our
parents when they are old.
