Department of Computer Science and Engineering: Summer-2021 Course Code: CSE209 Course Title: Electrical Circuits

This document summarizes an electrical circuits experiment conducted virtually. The objectives were to measure voltage, current, and resistance using a voltmeter and ammeter. Voltage was set from 5-10V across a 1000 ohm resistor. Measured and calculated values matched theoretical predictions based on Ohm's Law. A graph of voltage versus current produced a straight line through the origin, confirming the resistor value. Since the experiment was virtual, there were no discrepancies between theoretical and measured values.

Objectives:
1. To get familiar with circuit variables (voltage and current) and circuit elements (voltage
source and resistance).
2. To learn how to measure dc voltage across a circuit element using a voltmeter.
3. To learn how to measure dc current through a circuit element using an ammeter.
4. To learn how to measure resistance of a resistor using a multimeter.
5. To verify Ohm’s Law.

Answer(s) to the Post-Lab Report Questions:

1. Theoretically calculate the values of I using measured values of V and R. Compare the
theoretical values with the measured values and comment on any discrepancy.
Answer: Theoretically,
• When V= 5V, and R=1000Ω
I=V/R=5/1000=5mA.
• When V= 6V and R=1000Ω
I=V/R=6/1000=6mA.
• When V= 7V and R=1000Ω
I=V/R=7/1000=7mA.
• When V= 8V and R=1000Ω
I=V/R=8/1000=8mA.
• When V= 9V and R=1000Ω
I=V/R=9/1000=9mA.
• When V= 10V and R=1000Ω
I=V/R=10/1000=10mA.
The measured values from the Schematics are also the same. So there is no discrepancy.
2. Theoretically calculate the values of R from the measured values of V and I using Ohm’s
law. Compare the calculated and measure values of R and comment on any discrepancy.
Answer: Theoretically,
• When I= 5mA and V=5V
R=V/I=5/(5*10-3)=1000 Ω
• When I= 6mA and V=6V
R=V/I=6/(6*10-3)=1000 Ω
• When I= 7mA and V=7V
R=V/I=7/(7*10-3)=1000 Ω
• When I= 8mA and V=8V
R=V/I=8/(8*10-3)=1000 Ω
• When I= 9mA and V=9V
R=V/I=9/(9*10-3)=1000 Ω
• When I= 10mA and V=10V
R=V/I=10/(10*10-3)=1000 Ω
The measured values from the Schematics are also the same. So there is no discrepancy.
3. Compare the set value of E and the measured value of V and comment on any
discrepancy.
Answer: The set values of E given are: 5,6,7,8,9,10 V. Theoretically obtained values of
V are also 5,6,7,8,9,10 V. So, we can come to a decision that theoretical values and
values from simulation are exactly same.
4. Plot V vs. I (taking I as independent variable) and fit a straight-line passing through the
origin. From the plot determine the resistance of the supplied resistor using Ohm’s law.
Compare this value with the measured value and comment on any discrepancy.
Answer:

5
5 6 7 8 9 10 11
I(mA)

Conclusion: Since the experiment was done virtually so there are no errors at all between the
theoretical values and measured values.
