PROGRESSIVISM

Education must be ready to modify methods and policies in the light of new knowledge and changes.
Human nature improves by change; hence Progressivism emphasizes change in the whole
education process.
The child should be free to develop naturally in a democratic environment.
The key to reality is dynamic experience.
It advocates cultural liberalism. A liberal culture according to progressivists is open rather than
closed.
Driving force is matter and not the spirit.
No fixed values, aims, and curricula in advance.
Learning should be directly related to the interests of the child. Because the "interests" stimulated by
dir experience is the best stimulus for learning.
There should be close cooperation between the school and the home. School should encourage
cooperate rather than competition among students.
The progressive school should be a laboratory for pedagogical reform and experimentation.
The whole educational system is aimed at producing such activity and dynamic person who is fit for
and democratic environment.
The ultimate aim of education is to bring change considering the present and future needs.
Education is creative and changing. Hence curriculum should not be fixed in advance but be
develop Contextually according to the immediate needs and interests of the students.
The curriculum, textbooks, and other learning activities should materially be more productive and
market oriented.
Emphasis on natural/modern sciences
"Individual Differences" must be kept in view in the process of curriculum development.
The curricular activities should encourage the individual self-expression/individual action.
Progressivism claims to discourage ideological indoctrination and teaching the permanent
values particularly based on religious dogmas.

Practical activities
Mind developing is essentially a "do-it-yourself project"
Pupil-centered approach. Students' role in the educational process is active.
Teacher as a guide/facilitator and not a policeman/authoritarian
Encourages interactive/participative/collaborative/collective/shared teaching-learning process.
For creativity, individual self-expression, and active intelligence, the classroom environment
should democratic.
Teacher should pay more attention to the individual child
Teacher should discourage the exclusive reliance on bookish methods of instruction and passive
learning memorization of factual data.
Progressivists are against the use of fear and physical punishment as a form of discipline and
believe discipline from within.
