INTRODUCTION
Thermal conductivity is a physical property of materials that measures the heat conduction capacity. In other words, thermal conductivity
is also the ability of a substance to transfer the kinetic energy of its molecules to adjacent ones or to substances with which is in contact.
The thermal conductivity is an intensive magnitude that does not depend on the amount of mass. Its inverse magnitude is the thermal
resistivity, which is the ability of materials to oppose the passage of heat.
Thermal energy always flows spontaneously from higher to lower concentration, i.e. from hot to cold. This involves that the transmission
of heat by conduction occurs from one body to another that is at a lower temperature or between zones of the same material but with
different temperature.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Computer Controlled Thermal Conductivity of Liquids and Gases Unit, "TCLGC", has been designed to allow the students to appreciate
and understand the heat transfer process through any gas or liquid locked in a solid.
By the realization of the practices the student can determine the thermal conductivity of any gas or compatible liquid with the construction
materials.
The Computer Controlled Thermal Conductivity of Liquids and Gases Unit “TCLGC” consists of an aluminum cylinder, that forms the body
of the unit, which has inside a variable power heating element and temperature sensors, one of them inside the own heating element. It
also has a brass jacket that contains the test fluid and the refrigeration water.
The fluid, whose thermal conductivity is to be determined, fills the small distance of radial security between the body of heated aluminum
and a jacket with cooled water. This space is small enough to avoid the natural convection of the fluid.
The aluminum body and the water jacket are concentric thanks to two “o” ring joints which seal the distance of security, and which allow
easily and quick dismantling for cleaning.
The unit incorporates a water regulation valve, which allows the flow of water to be varied; a water flow sensor; and temperature sensors
at the water inlet and outlet.
The connection and disconnection of the sensors have been made to be easy and comfortable.
This Computer Controlled Unit is supplied with the EDIBON Computer Control System (SCADA), and includes: The unit itself + a
Control Interface Box + a Data Acquisition Board + Computer Control, Data Acquisition and Data Management Software Packages, for
controlling the process and all parameters involved in the process.

Faults Simulation System (FSS) is a Software package that simulates
several faults in any EDIBON Computer Controlled Unit. It is useful for
Technical and Vocational level.
The “FAULTS” mode consists in causing several faults in the unit
normal operation. The student must find them and solve them.
There are several kinds of faults that can be grouped in the following
sections:
Faults affecting the sensors measurement:
- An incorrect calibration is applied to them.
- Non-linearity.
Faults affecting the actuators:
