Module 5 Problem Solving

This document discusses problem solving techniques in mathematics. It explains inductive reasoning as drawing conclusions from specific examples, while deductive reasoning uses assumptions and principles to reach conclusions. Pattern recognition is important for problem solving, such as identifying sequences, polygonal numbers like triangular and square numbers, and using patterns to solve problems. The document provides references for further reading on inductive reasoning, deductive reasoning, and using patterns in problem solving.

Module 5 Problem Solving

At the end of this module, you are expected t0:

1. Apply inductive and deductive reasoning in solving problems.
2. Use patterns in problem solving.

Inductive reasoning
The type of reasoning where a conclusion is made by means of specific examples.
Conjecture is the conclusion formed using inductive reasoning.

Deductive reasoning
The type of reasoning where a conclusion is made by applying assumptions, procedures
or principles.

Problem Solving with patterns

Sequence –an ordered list of numbers
Term-the numbers in a sequence separated by commas
Polygonal Numbers
Geometric shapes associated with numbers.
Triangular numbers= n(n+1)/2
Square numbers=n2
Pentagonal numbers=n(3n-1)/2
