Let’s talk about IT

Q1. What are the key challenges with IT that Venu talks about?

A1. One of the biggest challenges with IT that makes the work harder for managers is keeping up
with IT. i.e., IT continuously comes up with regular updates, new models for security and efficiency
reasons, and most times, the marginal utility of these new updates, is not more than the old ones.
This creates hesitation, irritation amongst managers and workers alike, who 1) Do not have in-depth
knowledge of IT and are looking for the productivity and efficiency aspects that IT provides, and 2)
Are subjected to additional technical training that they feel are non-essential and can be utilized for
better use. This knowledge gap becomes a major hurdle for effective collaboration within teams.

This complicated nature of IT inter-web requiring licensing, new purchases, multiple device
accessibility, cross apps compatibility not only significantly increases the financial costs but also
creates an unnecessary hassle that could be resolved at the grass-roots level. With these constant
innovations, it becomes harder for companies to find skilled professionals costing them a fortune.

IT, without question, has revolutionized business and its practices but has also come up with newly
added cons of its own, namely, security and privacy risks. Most data is stored on cloud servers in
plaintext form and is dependent on the server’s intentions and security. On top of this, there is a
constant threat of a hacking attack on the systems, causing a partial or complete shutdown of the
business. This no control makes it harder for managers to connect talent for optimizing workflow.

With IT, every activity, however minuscule, is tracked and used against you. These constant spam,
pop-ups, targeted advertising leads to frustration and paranoia for the user. However, it has become
an addiction of its own, with the vast services it provides. From a young kid to an elderly, all can be
seen with some form of IT device, leading to a lack of holistic learning from the real world.

This immensely complicated structure, combined with a lack of knowledge, inherently creates a
negative bias towards its use and leads to bad IT-related financial decisions. Yet, it is essential due to
rising competition and the fear of losing to a competition/customer seeking better IT technology.

Q2. What do you think firms can do to avoid these?

A2. The essential thing that needs to be done by firms is to have better clarity over the use of IT and
its purpose. It should be kept strictly point-based and not let it free-fall over all departments. Having
clarity over the functions and its end goal will help in achieving targeting, funding future goals,
finding relevant talent, avoid unnecessary misunderstandings and complexes within teams. It is of
the utmost importance to maintain a balance between innovation and maintenance.

It is needed to be made sure that IT, though it doesn’t control all aspects of technology, is what
ensures nothing major goes wrong. To prevent security risks, firms need to invest in better IT and
trusted sources rather than cheaper untrustworthy sources for storing data. Technical training
should be kept for the essential aspects and divisions of the firm rather than on every minute
innovations and updates.

Better security, firewall, anti-virus measures have to be taken as even suggested by Dhira to prevent
privacy and addiction issues alike. IT can get better, only through better use of IT!
