AE2 Speaking Final 01.2022 - Topic and Instructions

Students are required to give a 6-8 minute persuasive presentation for their AE2 speaking final exam in January 2022. The presentation should propose and advocate for a safe and meaningful activity to welcome the Lunar New Year that could be done alone or with friends. It must use persuasive techniques to convince peers to participate and address the audience directly. The presentation needs to be well organized with an introduction, main points, transitions, and conclusion. It also requires 4-5 references and appropriate language for a foreign audience. Examiners will deduct points for presentations outside the time limits and ask a follow up question to evaluate response. Feedback and scores will be provided after all students present.

DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH

INSTRUCTIONS FOR AE2 SPEAKING FINAL EXAM

January 2022

1. Students are expected to give a 6–8-minute PERSUASIVE presentation with visual aids on a safe and meaningful
activity/idea to welcome 2022 Lunar New Year that you advise your friends to do, or you can do it
together. This activity/idea can be celebrated by the audience themselves or shared with their/your community.

The objective of the presentation is to persuade the audience (your peers) to celebrate or to help others
celebrate our country’s tradition in a practical way of the new normal. Students MAY take the following into
consideration: (1) reason(s) or problem(s) leading to the activity/idea; (2) how to carry out the activity/idea in
specific steps; (3) benefits/gains from that activity/idea, etc.

2. The purpose of this presentation is to persuade the audience, not just to give information. Therefore, students are
required to use relevant persuasive techniques, especially the ‘You-attitude’ (addressing the audience directly),
rather than presenting factual information.

3. The presentation should be well organized and include a good introduction, some main points, clear transitions,
and a conclusion which summarizes the main points.

4. Text should be limited on the slides, apart from the title of the presentation, key notes and technical words, data
and titles on graphs, tables, charts, and references.

5. A list of 4-5 references is required to prove the validity of the information. Google or Wikipedia are commonly
considered NOT reliable sources. Brief citations on specific slides - e.g. (Source: WHO) – are recommended.

6. Examiners need to keep track of the time and deduct points if the presentations are too short or too long. If
students run over 8 minutes, examiners must stop them.

Time in minutes Points deducted

Less than 5:00 mins -15 pts
From 5:00 to 5:29 mins -10 pts
From 5:30 to 5:59 mins -05 pts
From 6:00 to 8:00 mins
Over 8:00 mins (stop the student) -05 pts

7. Examiners need to take into consideration not only the presentation skills and English fluency of the presenters
but also the appropriateness of their presentations. Students should use language appropriate to foreigners and
should not use visual images unrelated to their topic or inappropriate to the audience.

8. The examiner MUST ask the student a question after the presentation to observe how the student handles this situation.

9. The examiner IS REQUIRED to give (verbal) feedback and show scores to the students after all the
presentations have been done.
