1. WRITTEN EXAM:
• Chapter 4 (A Survey of Prokaryotic Cells and Microorganisms)
▪ Differentiate Flagella, Fimbriae, and Pili according to Structure and Function and
identify at least 2 prokaryotic cells that contain each of the appendages.
▪ What is the importance of endospores to bacterial survival? How about its
medical significance? Identify 3 bacteria that produce endospores and what
disease/illness each cause.
▪ Reading Assignment: The human microbiome: Me, myself, and us
▪ Supplemental YouTube Videos: TedTalk by Bonnie Bassler: How bacteria "talk"
• Chapter 5 (A Survey of Eukaryotic Cells and Microorganisms)
▪ State a disease caused by each of the following protozoans and indicate their
means of motility and how they are transmitted to humans:
o Entamoeba histolytica
o Acanthamoeba
o Giardia lamblia
o Trichomonas vaginalis
o Trypanosoma brucei-gambiens
o Balantidium coli
o Plasmodium species
o Toxoplasma gondii
o Cryptosporidium
