Unit 38 DatabaseManagementSystem-RoshanSir

This document outlines an assignment for a database management systems course. Students are tasked with [1] comparing different database models and assessing how relational models provide structure, [2] designing a relational database for a supermarket with multiple branches to track items, employees, and more, and [3] developing a functional system using an open source platform. Requirements include testing, evaluating the design against requirements, and demonstrating system administration tools. The assignment aims to cover learning outcomes related to database analysis, design, development, and administration.

Assignment submission format

Each student has to submit their assignment as guided in the assignment brief. The students
are guided what sort of information is to produce to meet the criteria targeted. You are
required to make use of headings, paragraphs and subsections as appropriate, and all work
must be supported with research and referenced using the APA referencing system.

Learning outcomes covered

 LO1 Analyze different types of database management systems

 LO2 Design a database management system using a relational model to meet client
requirements
 LO3 Develop a database management system using a suitable platform
 LO4 Demonstrate the system administration and management tools available on the
chosen platform

Scenario

You have been hired as DBA for Bhat-Bhateni SuperMarket. Bhat-Bhateni Super Market is
one of the biggest retail supermarkets in Nepal. They want to extend their branch from central
to five different branches. So, it is necessary to build the database and an application to keep
the record of these members.

The System should include the following features:

 - Keep all branch records
 - Keep all Item and Stock records
 - Employee details and attendance records
 - Database security measures like login and permissions, back-up/restore, log
maintenance and system performance

Assignment Task

1. Write an article that compares and contrasts the different types of database models
and assesses how relational database models and the process of normalization can
provide reliable and efficient data structures. You can also make a critical evaluation
of different database management systems and operating systems available (both open-
source and vendor-specific), justifying the evaluation criteria. It should cover data
models, modeling languages and specifically examine relational databases and their
structures.

2. Design a relational database management system and analyze how the design will
optimize system performance.
3. Develop a fully functional system which meets client and system requirements, using
an open source language. Implement effective features to handle concurrency, security,
user authorizations and data recovery.

4. Produce evidence that shows you have tested the system for functionality and
performance.

5. Critically evaluate the effectiveness of the system you have designed and developed
against client and system requirement.

6. Prepare a document that

B- Demonstrate (present) the tools available in the system you have designed to
manage security and authorizations.

C- Assess the effectiveness of the system administration and management tools

available on the platform identifying any drawbacks of the tools and analyze any
future improvements that may be required to ensure the continued effectiveness of
the database system you have designed.
