SECTION 07210 - BUILDING INSULATION

PART 1 - GENERAL

1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS

A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary
Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section.

1.2 SECTION INCLUDES

A. Furnish all labour, materials, tools and equipment and perform all services and operations
materials, tools and equipment and perform all services and operations necessary for the
complete supply and installation of the following, but not limited to:

1. Thermal Insulation for:


a. Walls, roofs and soffit - concrete/CMU substrate
b. Basement roof under pavement
c. Cavity walls - CMU and other as indicated on the drawings
d. Behind metal cladding
e. Under side of slabs
2. Filler between slabs

B. Related Sections: Related work to be coordinated and used in conjunction with this
specification includes but is not restricted to:

1. Section 03300 - Cast-in-Place Concrete


2. Section 04200 - Masonry Units
3. Section 07430 - Composite Panels
4. Section 07550 - Modified Bituminous Membrane Roofing
5. Section 15080 - Mechanical Insulation

1.3 REFERENCES

A. All reference to standards, regulations and requirements of statutory bodies shall mean the
latest published editions at the time of contract. Product manufacture, testing and installation
shall comply with the following references unless otherwise stated in the specification or
otherwise approved.

1.4 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENT

A. Insulated roof over occupied spaces shall have a minimum average U value of 0.25 W/m2K –
shall be as indicated on the drawings.

1.5 DEFINITIONS

A. Mineral-Fibre Insulation: Insulation composed of rock-wool fibres, slag-wool fibres, or glass


fibres; produced in boards and blanket with latter formed into batts (flat-cut lengths) or rolls.

1.6 SUBMITTALS

A. General: Refer to Contract Specification Sections 01330 Submittal Procedures for submittal
requirements and procedures.

B. Submit Product data for each type of product indicated:

1. Complete list of all items proposed to be installed under this section.


2. Manufacturer's specifications and other data necessary to demonstrate compliance
with the specification.

C. Certified test reports showing compliance with performance values (physical properties)
specified.

D. Samples: 300mm square samples of all kinds of insulation and all fixing accessories.

E. Product Test Reports: Based on evaluation of comprehensive tests performed by a qualified


testing agency for insulation products.

F. Provide evidence that the extruded polystyrene insulation has zero Ozone Depleting Potential
(ODP), is CFC and HCFC free, and has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of less than five.

1.7 QUALITY ASSURANCE

A. Submit documented proof that the material has a proven record of successful performance
for more than ten (10) years, confirmed by at least five local projects.

B. Installer's Qualifications: The installer with minimum 5 years experience in handling rigid
insulation materials and shall be fully conversant with current manufacturer's published data.

C. Comply with all requirements of the project and the local Authorities.

D. Fire-Test-Response Characteristics: Provide insulation and related materials with the fire-
test-response characteristics indicated, as determined by testing identical products per test
method indicated below by UL or another testing and inspecting agency acceptable to
authorities having jurisdiction. Identify materials with appropriate markings of applicable
testing and inspecting agency.

materials
3. ASTM E 136: Standard Test Method for Behaviour of Material in Vertical Tube
Furnace @ 750°C

1.8 DELIVERY AND PROTECTION

A. Generally: Protect insulation against damage during delivery and storage, also against
deterioration by ultra violet light.

1.9 WARRANTY

A. A written certification shall be required that insulation meets Thermal Warranty.

B. Warranty shall also state that insulation’s actual thermal resistance will not vary by more than
10% from the designed R-Value for a period of fifteen (15) years.

C. Submit documented proof that the material has a proven record of successful performance
for more than 10 years, confirmed by at least five local projects.

D. Comply with all requirements of the project and the local Authorities.

PART 2 - PRODUCTS

2.1 POLYSTYRENE THERMAL INSULATION

A. The insulation shall be a non-absorbent, foam extruded, closed cell polystyrene board
specifically manufactured for use in roofing and as wall insulation. Comply with ASTM C578
and shall meet all requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

B. Edges of boards shall be rebated (Shiplap).

C. Physical properties of INS-1, for roofs, walls, cavity walls and soffit outside the building
envelope:

1. Thermal conductivity : 0.016 W/m2oK (DIN 52612)


: 0.032 W/m2oK (ASTM C177)
- 5 years aged value

2. Water Absorption :
1% by volume to ASTM D2842
3. Capillarity :
Nil
4. Density :
32-35 kg/m3
5. Compressive strength :
220 – 360 KPA to DIN 53421 or 42 – 65

50mm for walls and 75mm for roof unless
otherwise indicated on drawings
8. Flame Spread/Smoke Developed Values (ASTM E84): 5/165.

D. Structural Polystyrene used as Typical Fill:

1. Material: Rigid cellular polystyrene thermal insulation with closed cells formed by
expansion of polystyrene base resin in an extrusion process.
2. Comply with the requirements of ASTM C 578, Type VII.
3. Compressive strength, 60 psi, ASTM D 1621.
4. Compressive modulus, min 2200 psi, ASTM D 1621.
5. Flexural strength, 75 psi, ASTM C 203.
6. Thickness as indicated on drawings.

E. Structural Polystyrene for Wheel Load Applications:

1. Material: Rigid cellular polystyrene thermal insulation with closed cells formed by
expansion of polystyrene base resin in an extrusion process.
2. Comply with the requirements of ASTM C 578, Type V.
3. Compressive strength, 100 psi, ASTM D 1621.
4. Compressive modulus, min 3700 psi, ASTM D 1621.
5. Flexural strength, 100 psi, ASTM 203.
6. Thickness as indicated on drawings.

2.2 MINERAL FIBER THERMAL INSULATION

A. Mineral fibre insulation manufactured from stable glass fibres bonded with thermosetting
resins. Comply with ASTM C 612 with flame-spread and maximum smoke-developed indices
of 25 and 50 respectively, ASTM E 136. Edges of boards shall be square.

B. Physical Properties of INS-2, on metal liner behind metal wall panels and below soffit of slabs
where the space above is air-conditioned:

1. Thermal conductivity: 0.035w/moK DIN 52612.


(K Value): K=0.24 Imperial.
2. Density: 48kg/m3.
3. Thickness As indicated on drawings or to meet the U value
requirements of the Project.

C. Insulation for packing into cavities: Resilient, fibrous glass or mineral wool having a nominal
density of 12 kg/m3.

2.3 MINERAL FIBER INSULATION

A. Mineral fibre insulation manufactured from stable glass fibres bonded with thermosetting
resins, with flame-spread and maximum smoke-developed indices of 25 and 50 respectively,
ASTM E 136.

1. Minimum Density: 32kg/cu.m.


2. Facing: None
3. Thickness: As indicated on drawings

2.4 HIGH DENSITY POLYSTYRENE INSULATION

A. As per Section 03300 Cast-in-Place Concrete

2.5 POLYSTYRENE THERMAL INSULATION

A. The insulation shall be a non-absorbent, foam extruded, closed cell polystyrene board
specifically manufactured for use in roofing and as wall insulation. Comply with ASTM C578
and shall meet all requirements of authorities having jurisdiction.

B. Edges of boards shall be rebated (Shiplap).

C. Physical properties of INS-7, for basement roof slab:

1. Thermal conductivity : 0.016 W/moK (DIN 52612)


- 5 years aged value 0.030 W/moK (ASTM C177)
2. Water Absorption : 1% by volume to ASTM D2842
3. Capillarity : Nil
4. Density : 45-48 kg/m3
5. Compressive strength : 450 – 700 KPA to DIN 53421 or 65 – 100 PSI
to ASTM D-1621
6. Fire : Class B1 to BS 476
7. Thicknesses : As indicated on drawings

2.6 ADHESIVE

A. As recommended by insulation manufacturer for specific application with demonstrated


capacity to bond insulation securely to substrate indicated without damaging insulation and
substrates.

2.7 ACCESSORIES

A. Vapour barrier: 250 micron thick clear polyethylene conforming to ASTM D4397 lapped and
taped 100mm on sides and ends. Physical properties for materials shall conform to ASTM
E154.

B. Fasteners and accessories required for the installation shall be as recommended by the
manufacturer.

C. Mechanical Fasteners: Corrosion-resistant fasteners consisting of thermal cap, standard


washer and shaft attachments, and fastener of the following description:

1. For attachment to masonry and concrete substrates, provide sheathing dowel in form
of a plastic wing-tipped fastener with thermal cap, sized to fit insulation thickness
indicated and to penetrate substrate to depth required to secure anchorage.

D. Insulation Fasteners: Impale clip type of plain finished steel; of type to be adhered to surface
to receive rigid insulation; length to suit insulation thickness; capable of securely and rigidly
fasting insulation in place.

E. Anchor Adhesive: Product with demonstrated capability to bond insulation anchors securely
to substrates indicated without damaging insulation, fasteners, and substrates.

2.8 SEPARATION LAYER (FILTER FABRIC)

A. Non-woven Geotextile fabric composed of thermally bonded continuous 100% polypropylene


filaments with fibre diameter 40-50 microns with the following properties:

1. Tensile strength (ASTM D 4595): 8.5 KN/m.


2. Elongation at break: 52%.
3. Tear strength (ASTM D 4533): 140 N.
4. Permeability at 20 KN/m2 (DIN 60500-4): 3.2 x 10-4 m/s.
5. Thickness: 0.45mm.
6. Weight: 80gm/m2.

PART 3 - EXECUTION

3.1 EXAMINATION

A. Ensure that surfaces to receive insulation are clean, dry, and suitable to provide a complete
and satisfactory installation.

3.2 INSTALLATION, GENERAL

A. Comply with insulation manufacturer's written instructions applicable to products and


application indicated.

B. Install insulation that is undamaged, dry, and unsoiled and that has not been left exposed at
any time to rain.

C. Extend insulation in thickness indicated to envelop entire area to be insulated. Cut and fit
tightly around obstructions and fill voids with insulation. Remove projections that interfere
with placement.

D. For preformed insulating units, provide sizes to fit applications indicated and selected from
manufacturer's standard thicknesses, widths, and lengths. Apply single layer of insulation
units to produce thickness indicated unless multiple layers are otherwise shown or required
to make up total thickness.

3.3 INSTALLATION OF CAVITY WALL INSULATION

A. On units extruded polystyrene board insulation, install pads of adhesive spaced


approximately 300mm o.c. both ways on inside face, and as recommended by manufacturer.
Fit courses of insulation between wall ties and other obstructions, with edges butted tightly in
both directions. Press units firmly against inside substrates indicated.

3.4 INSTALLATION OF INSULATION

A. General: Apply insulation units to substrates, complying with manufacturer’s written


instructions. Bond units to substrate with adhesive or use mechanical anchorage to provide
permanent placement and support of units.

B. Extruded polystyrene Insulation Boards (Roofs):

1. Install board insulation on roofing membrane as follows:


a. Install in accordance with manufacturer's recommendations.
b. Cut clearly to fit closely around projections, up stands, rainwater outlets etc.
c. Seal joints between insulation units by applying adhesive, mastic, or sealant to
edges of each unit to form a tight seal as units are shoved into place. Fill voids
in completed installation with adhesive, mastic, or sealant as recommended by
insulation manufacturer.
d. Protect from damage after installation.

C. Extruded Polystyrene Insulation Boards on concrete/CMU (walls); mineral fibre on soffit:


1. Ensure that surfaces to receive insulation are dry and free of matter detrimental to
installation of uniform layer of insulation.
2. Install board insulation to the substrates by adhesively attached, spindle-type insulation
anchors as follows:
a. Fasten insulation anchors to concrete substrates with insulation anchor adhesive
according to anchor manufacturer's written instructions.
b. Provide minimum of four fasteners per 600mm x 1200mm board, allowing for a
maximum load per fastener of 1.5kg.
i Check for compatibility of adhesive with any concrete form release agent
used.
c. After adhesive has dried, install board insulation by pressing insulation into
position over spindles and securing it tightly in place with insulation-retaining
washers, taking care not to compress insulation below indicated thickness.

D. Cavity walls Extruded Polystyrene Insulation Boards

1. On extruded polystyrene board insulation install pads of adhesive spaced


approximately 300mm o.c. both ways on inside face, and as recommended by
manufacturer. Fit courses of insulation between wall ties and other obstructions, with
edges butted tightly in both directions. Press units firmly against inside substrates
indicated.
a. As per Section 04200 Masonry Units.

E. Mineral Fibre Insulation Boards on metal liner

1. Ensure that surfaces to receive insulation are dry and free of matter detrimental to
installation of uniform layer of insulation.
2. Adhere stick clips to metal air barriers and concrete substrates at 300mm o.c. both
ways; 2 fasteners minimum for each full board width of 610mm and 4 fasteners for
each full board length 1220mm to ensure firm and continuous contact with substrates
and adjacent insulation boards.

3. Install insulation without gaps or voids in accordance with manufacturer's instructions.


4. Trim insulation neatly to fit spaces. Use insulation free of damage.
5. Place insulation in cavities formed by framing members to produce a friction fit
between edges of insulation and adjoining framing members.
6. Fit insulation tight in spaces and leave no gaps or voids.

3.5 INSTALLATION OF VAPOR BARRIERS

A. General: Extend vapour barriers to extremities of areas to be protected from vapour


transmission. Secure in place with adhesives or other anchorage systems as indicated.

B. Seal joints caused by pipes, conduits and similar items penetrating vapour barrier with
vapour retarder tape to crate air tight seal.

C. Repair tears or punctures in vapour barriers immediately before concealment by other work.

3.6 ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROL AND PROTECTION

A. Protection:

1. Protect all insulation from unnecessary construction traffic after installation. Protection
shall be approved and shall prevent any damage likely to result in a decrease in the
efficiency of the insulation.
2. Protect from long periods of exposure before being concealed, by proper sequencing
of the work.
