Eddy Current Sensor: 1 Mct/Unit I/Narasimharaj V/Lecture Materials/Iv Mech

An eddy current sensor works by producing an alternating magnetic field from a coil near a conductive material. This induces eddy currents in the material, generating an opposing magnetic field. As the distance between the coil and material changes, the field interaction changes as well. The sensor measures this to output a voltage proportional to the gap. Eddy current sensors can detect sub-millimeter positional changes and are low-cost, compact, reliable, and effective at high temperatures.

EDDY CURRENT SENSOR

• Fundamentally a measure of position change of an object

• Linear position measurement - measurement of the

position change of an object

• High-resolution, short-range nature of eddy-current

position sensors

• Also called a position meter or position gauge

EDDY CURRENT SENSOR
• Used to detect the presence or absence of non magnetic
but conductive materials
• If the coil is supplied with an alternating current ,an
alternating magnetic field is produced.
• If there is an object in close proximity to this alternating
magnetic field, then eddy currents are induced in it.
• Consists of two coils
One coil - reference coil and
the other - senses the magnetic current

EDDY CURRENT SENSOR - WORKING
• Produces an alternating magnetic field at the probe tip

• When this field is near a conductive material, the field creates

(induces) small electrical eddy-currents in the material

• These currents generate a magnetic field that opposes the field

from the sensor

• As the gap between the probe and target gets smaller, the field
interaction changes

The sensor electronics measure this field interaction and generate

an output voltage proportional to the change in the gap

EDDY CURRENT SENSOR
• When the object is nearer to the sensing coil, the eddy currents
are produced more and hence the change in magnetic impedance
becomes larger

• The coil forms two arms of the impedance bridge

• The bridge has a supply frequency usually of 1 Mhz or higher

• In the absence of the object the output of the impedance bridge

is zero

• As the object moves closer to the sensing coil eddy currents are
produced more and hence the voltage output in the bridge circuit is
more
