"With Hard Work and Effort, You Can Achieve Anything" - Antoine Griezmann
As a person who is drawn to the challenge of finding practical solutions to problems rather than
the theoretical, my undergraduate studies in architecture have piqued my interest and provided
personal satisfaction in the field. Architecture, to me, is constantly developing since it depends
so intensely on context and the user's requirements - not only practical and aesthetic needs but
also a more profound knowledge of what is needed to achieve a better quality of life in the end.
The first-class degree I received is a fair reflection of my enthusiastic response to the course.
With a solid foundation in both theoretical and practical aspects of architecture and design, I am
ready to pursue a master's degree in urban design as the next step in my professional
development. I believe that the MA in Urban Design degree will help me tremendously as I work
toward my goal of becoming a professional urban designer, and I believe that my previous
training and education will benefit greatly from this programme.
"Why did you narrow down your interest into urban design?" was a common question I was
asked. Firstly, I became fascinated with the urban design after observing the differences between
American cities, such as New York and my hometown of Chennai. Another reason is that, in my
opinion, there is a social divide between planned and spontaneous urban areas, in which the
wealthy and white-collar elite reside in planned urban areas. At the same time, the poor populate
unplanned urban areas filled to the brim in pollution, as if they had no right to be on this planet.
This was the point when I realised that our country's terrible urban design would directly impact
our personal development, and it sparked my interest in this career path. Having access to this
door will allow me to close the social divide between these two urban communities. To improve
the lives of those who have been overlooked, I need to design poorly planned and affected urban
areas/ghettos.
For me, the most important factor in choosing to pursue postgraduate education was the desire
for hands-on learning. The School of Architecture at the University of Sheffield provides
students with cutting-edge facilities that will allow me to do just that. Additionally, the course
includes a design studio project and core modules on urban design theory and practise. I'll be
able to learn about a wide range of subjects thanks to optional modules and study trips and
workshops. I will learn how to build a socially and environmentally responsible architectural
practice in my home country, India.
My greatest assets are my abilities to comprehend, analyze, and develop accurate concepts and
my original creativity in cross-functional project teams. I chose to study urban design because
the feeling of contributing so intrinsically to the everyday lives of a variety of people is beyond
comprehension. Maybe what I design ends up being renovated, or added to, or removed from, or
demolished altogether – but, for some time, there would exist a part of me in this world that was
put there with the intent of making needful changes, one at a time. I hope to get the opportunity
to grow at and grow in the years to come. For my educational and professional goals, your
Master of Science programme is ideal. I can expect a cutting-edge education from a diverse and
international student body, as well as cutting-edge facilities and esteemed professors, at this
university.
