What I Need To Know: Other Types of Sequences
What I Need To Know: Other Types of Sequences
1
Performance Standards: The learner is able to solve problems
involving sequences, polynomials and polynomial equations in
different disciplines through appropriate and accurate representations.
WHAT’S IN
2
You have learned that some sequences follow a specific pattern.
And to find a missing number, find first a rule behind the sequence.
You just need to look at the numbers and see a pattern.
(2,4,6,..)Arithmetic sequence
an=a1 +(n-1)d
(3,12,48,..)Geometric sequence
an = a1rn-1
REVIEW
Direction: Find the first five terms of the given nth term.
1. an = a1 + (n-1) d Where: a1 =1 , d = 3
2. an = a1rn-1 Where: a1 = 2 , r = 2
WHAT’S NEW
3
Find the first 11 terms of the sequence defined by the nth term by a1 =
1, a2 = 1 and an = an – 1 + an – 2
WHAT IS IT
a1=1
a2=2
a3 = a2 + a1 = 1 + 1 = 2
a4 = a3 + a2 = 2 + 1 = 3
a5 = a4 + a3 = 3 + 2 = 5
Now that you know, what would be the next term for this
sequence. Each term is simply the sum of the first two terms that
precedes it, so that it’s easy to write down as
many terms without struggle. Here are the first 11 terms:

What is a Fibonacci sequence?
5
WHAT’S MORE
1. Given the Fibonacci sequence 5, 8, 13, 21, 34,55,89 ... ,find the
next term.
6
Solution: The next number in the Fibonacci sequence is found by
adding up the two numbers before it. So in this case, 55 + 89 = 144.
Therefore the next term is 144.
2. Find the next 5 terms of the given Fibonacci sequence 144, 233,
377...
Now, you are ready to solve some problems that involve Fibonacci
sequence. The next activities will test your understanding about this
sequence.
Direction: Fill in the missing values and describe the number Pattern!
7
Is it that simple in finding next term of the sequence? Were you
able to describe the pattern of the Fibonacci sequence? The next
activity is a little more challenging.

Leonardo Pisano (Fibonacci) pondered the question: How
many pairs of rabbits can be produced from a single pair of rabbits, in
one year, under optimal conditions (none die and the females always
give birth to one male and one female)? Rabbits must be one month
old to reproduce, so only one pair exists again at the beginning of the
2nd month. At the end of the 2nd month, the female gives birth,
leaving 2 pairs of rabbits at the beginning of the 3rd month, the
original pair produce another pair of newborns(while earlier offspring
mature), leaving 3 pairs to start the 4th month. How many pairs of
rabbits will be present at the end of the 12th month (or the beginning
of the 13th month)? Give the complete sequence, where each entry
represents the number of pairs of rabbits at the beginning of each
month.

Now, create your own sequence. How are you going to get the
next number in the sequence? Write out your sequence, and
then write down the rule for obtaining the next number:

ASSESSMENT
Find out how much you already know about this lesson. On a
sheet of paper, write the letter which you think contains the best
answer to each question. After taking and checking this short test,
take note of the items that you were not able to answer correctly and
look for the right answer as you review the lesson.

4. What is one way to decide if the set of numbers follow a Fibonacci
sequence?
a. If each number is the sum of the two preceding ones
b. if each term after the first term is found by adding the previous
one by a common difference
c. If each term after the first term is found by multiplying the
previous one by a common ratio
d. if each term is just a reciprocal of arithmetic sequence

Guide Questions:
1. What connections do you find in the pattern made by the number
of branches and the leaves and flowers of the plant with the pattern of
Fibonacci sequence?
2. Make an investigation and cite at least one kind of plant that has
the same feature that can be found in the Philippines.
