lll. Procedure

a. Preparatory Activities

Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Activity

1. Greetings

Good morning class. Good morning teacher.

Do you feel great this time? Yes, teacher. How about you?
Okay, I feel great too.

the prayer. (pupil A will lead the prayer)

3. Checking of attendance

Okay, have a sit everyone. I’m

going to check your
attendance. Once I called your
name please state your
favorite number.

Okay, give yourselves an

applause for having a perfect
attendance today.

4. Review from previous lesson

Yesterday, we discuss about
counting numbers. Now who
can recall what it is all about?
Yes, pupil B? Place value is the value of the place of a
digit in a number.

Very good pupil B.

Class, do you have any

questions about that lesson? None teacher.

Okay, that’s great again.

When you say none it means
you all understand the topic
very well, right? Yes, teacher.

That’s excellent!

5. Motivation

At this time, let us have a

game. Do you love games? Yes, teacher.

Okay, our game is called

“How Many We Are?”.
I have here flash cards of
different pictures of animals.
Before I will tell the mechanics
I would like to group you first
into three. Column 1 would be
the group 1, column 2 would
be group 2 and column 3
would be group 3.
Now, in the flash cards are set
of different animals. What you
are going to do is to give the
exact number of how many
they are in the first picture and
how many they are combining
their numbers in the second
picture.
Example: when I show the first
card, you have to count how
many animals are their, after
that I will show another cards
and still you have to count how
many they are. Lastly, is we
will combine the two cards and
count how many they are in
all.
Do you get my point class? Yes, teacher.

Very good!
So, the group having many
correct answers will be the
winner.
And winners will have an
additional point in our
evaluations, but don’t worry
whoever get loss you can also
receive an additional point for
your participation.
Okay ready? Yes, teacher.

(The game starts)

Congratulations to column 3
for winning and to the rest of
you for showing what you’ve
got. Column three will receive
additional 10 points and the
rest will also receive an
additional 8 points.

6. Presentation of topic

Are you having fun with our

game? Yes, teacher.

Okay, that’s great. So, do you

have any idea about our
lesson today?
Yes, pupil C? Our lesson for today is all about Addition
of Whole numbers.

Very good!
Today we are going to discuss
about Addition of Whole
Numbers.

b. Lesson Proper

1. Activity

Now I have here a story about

“Santa the Giver”.
Listen attentively because I
am going to ask you questions
after the story.
Are ready to listen? Yes, teacher.
(The teacher will read the
story).

2. Analysis

What is the story all about?

Yes, pupil E? The story is all about Santa the Giver.

You are right!

What did Santa give to the
children in the street?
Yes, pupil M? Santa give chocolates and toys to the
children.

Correct!
If Santa give the first group of Some of the numbers have the same
children 12chocolates and 8 answer.
toys, how many in all did
Santa give?
Yes, pupil G? All in all is 20 teacher.

Superb answer!
How about in the second
group of children where Santa
gives 15 chocolates and 10
toys? There were 25 in all teacher.

But, how did you come up with

that answer?

3. Abstraction

So before digging deeper let

us first define addition.
Anybody has an idea about
addition? Addition is an act of adding a numbers.
Let us hear from pupil C?

You are correct.

When we talk about addition,
this means that we are going Factors are numbers that when multiplied
to find the total value of two or will result to a certain number.
more numbers by using the
symbol (+).

When we talk about addition

we need to be familiar with its
common terms such as
addend and sum.

Now, who can define addend? Addend is the number being added.
Yes, pupil F?

You are right!

In equation;
3
+ 5
8
3 and 5 there are the addends.
Now, what is the term for the
answer it obtained?
Yes pupil A? It is called sum teacher.

Correct!
The answer to addition
problem is called sum.

Here are the steps in adding

numbers.

If we add numbers in 1 digit,

we can merely do it
straightforwardly like our
previous example 3+5=8.

But in adding numbers having

more than 1 digit, first thing we
do is to align it according to its
place value.
Example:
23
+ 5
The first addend is in tens
place and the second one is in
ones place. What we gonna
do is to align the second
addends with the first addends
according to its place value.

In 23, the ones place is 6 and

2 is the tens place. So, it shoul
be that the second number 5
which is in the ones place
must be placed below the
ones place of the first number
which is 3.

In this way we can freely add

the number.
So it goes like this;
23
+ 5
28
Do you get the point class?
Yes, teacher.
Okay, let’s have another
example;
421
+ 76

In this example the first

addend is in the hundreds
place and the second addend
is in the tens place. We should
placed the second addends
below the first and according
to their place value.
In this way, the sum is 479.
Do you follow class?

Okay , I have here another

example and I want volunteers
to answer it on the board.
(The selected pupils perform the addition
Examples: on the board).
1. 73
+ 25

2. 186
+ 12

3. 531
+ 107

4. 100
+ 9

5. 74
+ 5

Okay, come over and solve

pupil H, J, I, K and L

Really great!
Let’s give our volunteers a
wow clap for an amazing
computation.

Generalization:
Did you all understand the
process, class?
Yes, teacher.
Okay, so in your own opinion,
what do you think is the
importance of addition in our
daily lives?
Yes, pupil K?
Addition is important especially in
handling money.
What a brilliant idea!
You are right, it is useful in so
many ways. Like for example
we are given allowance
everyday and from that we are
going to save atleast 1 peso
each day and at the end of the
week, by addition we can
simply calculate the number of
peso we have from our daily
savings.
Another thing is when we are
selling, the concept of addition
is important so that we can
gain profit in selling.
Do you agree with that?
Yes, teacher.

Okay, so again, what is

Addition?
Yes, pupil M?
It is the process of getting the total value
of a number.
Correct!
And in addition we have some
terms that needs to be bear in
mind which is the addends
and the sum. Addends are
numbers to be added and sum
is the answer or the result of
the addition process.
And to avoid confusion, also
align the place value of two
numbers in adding.

Is everything clear?
Do you have any questions or Yes, teacher.
clarifications?
None, teacher.
4. Application

Since you already understand

our lesson. Let’s have a group
activity. The same group
earlier.
What you will be going to do is
you have to answer one word
problem involving addition of
whole numbers.
Each group has different word
problem. You have to show
your solution in a manila paper
provided and select two
representatives to discuss
your work in front. I will only
give you 5 minutes to finish
your activity, so please utilize
your time wisely. Everyone
must cooperate. Are
instructions clear?
Yes, teacher.
Okay, here is the situation that
you have to answer.
(The teacher give the word
problem to each group).

Time is over, present your

work now. Group 1 will be the
first to present.

Very good presentation class,

you did it all greatly.
