Procedure to activate Microsoft Multi-Factor Authenticator

Note: To activate MFA you will need to operate both on your smartphone and your computer. If you have any doubts on what device each step is referred to, check the symbol on the left

Download “Microsoft Authenticator” from Google Play/App Store on


1 your mobile device.
Note: If you are an iPhone user be sure you activate the notifications for the app (click
here for further info)

On your computer visit your Microsoft Security Info webpage. If you


were already logged in proceed to step 3, otherwise you will be asked to

enter your full FAO email. After clicking on “Next” you will be redirected
to the FAO login portal where you will enter your credentials to sign in.

You will see a “Security Info” page. Click on “Add method”, select the

“Authenticator app” option and click “Next”.
It will show a message requiring the app installation. Since it should
already be installed, click “Next”.
4 A message to “Set up your account” will appear; follow the prompts and
click “Next”.
Then, a QR Code will be shown.

Launch the Microsoft Authenticator app on your mobile device. In the


first screen tap “Skip”. In the second screen tap “Skip”. In the third
screen tap the “Add work account” button and scan the QR code shown
5 on your PC.
Note: If asked, please allow the application to access the camera.

After few seconds, the FAO account will be added to your Microsoft

Authenticator app, and a 6-digit OTP will be visible.

Back to your computer, the MFA verification will be triggered for the first

time to verify the correct pairing of your account to the mobile device.

A notification will appear on your mobile phone asking you to approve

the sign-in to your account. Tap on “Approve”.

It will show a message saying your Authenticator was successfully set up.
You will see it registered on your Security info.
Note: It is recommended that you select at least one additional
9 authentication method in the unlikely event that the authenticator app
fails to function correctly. To do so, click on “Add method” as shown in
step 3; receiving a text message is a particularly recommended
alternative sign-in method, as is receiving a call back on a phone. 

A summary of your MFA settings will be shown.
