Design of Experiments

1. R. D Snee (“Experiment with a large number of variables”, in Experiments in industry: Design,

analysis and interpretation of results, by R. D. Snee, L. B Hare, and J. B. Trout, Editors, ASQC,
1985) describes an experiment in which a 25-1 design with I=ABCDE was used to investigate the
effects of five factors on the color of chemical product. The factors are A: solvent/reactant, B:
catalyst/reactant, C: temperature, D: reactant purity, E: reactant pH. The responses obtained were
follows:
e = -0,06 d = 6,85
a = 2,55 ade = 5,50
b = -2,68 bde = 3,48
abe = 1,60 abd = 5,75
c = 2,06 cde = 5,25
ace = 1,22 acd = 4,40
bce = -2,09 bcd = 4,32
abc = 1,93 abcde = 4,00

a. Prepare a normal probability plot of the effects. Which effect seem active?
b. Calculate the residuals. Construct a normal probability plot of the residual and plot the residual
versus the fitted values. Comment on the plots.
c. If any factors are negligible, collapse the 2 5-1 design into a full factorial in the active factors.
Comment on the resulting design, and interpret the results.

2. An experiment was performed to study the effect of three different types of 32-ounce bottles (A)
and three different shelf types (B)-smooth permanent shelves, end -aisle displays, with grilled
shelves, and beverages coolers-on the time it takes to stock ten 12-bottles cases on the shelves.
Three workers (factors C) were employed in the experiment, and two replicated of a 3 3 factorial
design were run. The observed time data are shown in the following table. Analyze the data and
draw conclusions.

3. A chemical plant produces oxygen by liquefying air and separating it into its components gases by
fractional distillation. The purity of the oxygen is a function of the main condenser temperature and
pressure ratio between the upper and lower columns. Current operating conditions are temperature
(ξ1) = -220 °C and pressure ratio (ξ2) = 1.2. Using the following data, find the path of steepest
ascent.
Temperature (ξ1) Pressure Ratio (ξ2) Purity

-225 1.3 83.5
-215 1.1 84.7

4. A rocket propellant manufacturer is studying the burning rate of propellant from three production
process. Four batch of propellant are randomly selected from the output of each process, and three
determination of burning rate are made on each batch. The results follow. Analyze the data and
draw conclusions.
