Module 3a-Physics 1
Module 3a-Physics 1
Outline:
a. Position, Time, Distance, Displacement,
b. Speed, Av erage Velocity,
c. Av erage Acceleration
d. I nstantaneous Velocity and I nstantaneous Acceleration
Learning Objectives:
After completing the module, the students w ill be able to:
1. Use the fact that magnitude of acceleration due to gravity on the Earth’s surface is nearly
constant and approximately 9.8m/s2 in free fall problems, and
2. Solv e problems involving one-dimensional motion with constant acceleration in contexts such
as, but not limited to, the “tail-gating phenomenon.” Pursuit, rocket launch, and free-fall
problems.
Kinematics
(mathematical description
of motion)
Mechanics
(study of motion)
Dynamics
(study of causes of motion)
POSITION
- it is the location of a body in space w ith reference to a fixed point
Sample Problem: I n the 1980’s one of Asia’s fastest running woman w as a Filipino athlete
named Lydia de Vega. In the 100-meter dash event in 1986 in Seoul, South Korea, she w as
clocked at 11.53s. Find her av erage speed.
t= 11.53s
For better comprehension of the problem, we can use an
illustration that depict the scenario of the problem.
d= 100m
t= 11.53 s
What do we know from the problem?
d= 100m
What is the unknown? Average speed (v)
dis tan ce(d )
FORMULA: speed(v)
time(t )
SOLUTION
Substituting the given in the formula,
then solving for the speed v= 8.67 m/s
ACCELERATION
- measure of how fast or slow velocity changes
changeinvelocity
- acceleration
time int erval
v v f vi
- a
t t
Sample Problem: As in the previous example, imagine that Lydia de Vega attained a speed of
6 m/s after 2 s from the start of the race. Solve the following problems using the given
information:
a. What is her av erage acceleration during this time interv al?
b. Suppose she attained a speed of 10 m/s after 8 s from the start of the race. What is her
av erage acceleration during the 2- to 8-second time interv al?
c. Suppose at 8 s from the start of the race, she slows down to a speed of 7 m/s for 2 s.
What is her av erage acceleration for this time interv al?
v= 6 m/s
You may draw an illustration to better comprehend the
problem
t= 2s
FORMULA:
SOLUTION
Substituting the given in the formula, then solving for the
acceleration
a= 3m/s2

MODULE 3A ASSESSMENT
PROBLEM SOLVING. Answer the following in a clean sheet of paper. Identify the given and show your
complete solution.
(50 points; 10 points each item)
1. Jon Snow is jogging with an average speed of 2.22 m/s, how far w ill he go if he runs for 1.5
hours?
2. I n 30 mins, Pikachu w as able to run from rest to 1 km/hr, w hat is its acceleration?
3. What is the acceleration (ft/s 2) of a snail travelling at a snail’s pace (12ft/day) that decides to
slow down to only 5ft/day, and allow s himself 2 min in w hich to make the change?
4. At the end of a drag race, upon crossing the finish line, the driver of the racing car deploys a
parachute and applies the brakes to slow down. The driv er begins slowing down w hen t i =
10.0 s and the car’s velocity is v i = 31 m/s. When tf = 13.0 s, the velocity has been reduced to v f
= 16 m/s. What is the av erage acceleration of the dragster?
5. A plane of the Philippine Air Lines starts from rest and accelerates dow n the runw ay and at 29 s
attains a v elocity of 260 km/hr. Determine the acceleration of the plane.
