What are NGOs?
A non-governmental organization ( NGO) is a non-profit,
citizen-based group that functions independently of
government.

• They are formed voluntarily;

• They are independent of government;

• They are not for private profit or gain; and.

• Their principal is to improve the circumstances and prospects


of disadvantaged people.
Back to the past

Bangladesh after independence in 1971


suffered serious crises in terms of
economic, social and humanitarian
degrees. The subsequent governments due
to lack of funds and sometimes stalled
economic progress had to rely heavily on
social, humanitarian and economic
development of rural and remote areas of
Bangladesh on the NGOs. The NGOs on
their part received huge donations from
abroad.
NGOs in Bangladesh
NGO plays numerable activities to develop territory and engaged in the broad
socio-economic uplift of the poor in rural and urban areas.

The NGOs in Bangladesh have intervened in a number of key areas:

➢ Poverty reduction

➢ Women's right

➢ Primary education

➢ Family planning and health care services

➢ Micro-credit to the poor

➢ Environmental protection
Main notion of NGOs in Bangladesh:
Empowering the poor
Some local NGOs in Bangladesh:

BRAC is the largest non -governmental development organization in the


world. Also known as Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee, “is a
development organization dedicated to reducing poverty by empowering the
poor to bring about change in their own lives.

HEED Bangladesh is a National, non -profit making voluntary organization


in Bangladesh. It has started its journey in 1974. Now HEED Bangladesh is
working in 32 districts of Bangladesh and their slogan is ‘Serving the
Humanity’ and focused on relief and welfare programs.
Local NGOs
The JAAGO Foundation is a civil society organization established in
April 2007 and based in Bangladesh. JAAGO operates w ith the help of
its employees and w ork tow ards the betterment of people living below
the poverty line.

Caritas Bangladesh w orks in integrated development, disaster


management, and human resource development. They start their
journey in 1967 as Caritas East Pakistan.

Proshika is a Bangladesh -based organization founded in 1976 that


promotes self -reliance among the poor, through a network of local
organizations concerning on agriculture, forestry, health education,
disaster preparedness, advocacy, and literacy
Issues with NGOs

1. Unsure about service delivery throughout the country

2. NGO funding remains vulnerable to changing fashions and


aid priorities of donors.

3.Difficult to measure whether the poor have been


empowered by NGO activities.

4. Lack of long -term strategic planning.

Some economist feels NGO’s have empowered the poor in


Bangladesh. Explain the process of empowerment. However it
has been a contentious issue. Give your views on it. (Try to think
about the controversy regarding Micro credit)
