Enterprise Resource Planning

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems integrate core business processes like finance, logistics, and human resources. ERP modules include finance, HR, production, purchasing, inventory, and sales/marketing. Decision support systems analyze large data volumes to help users make informed business decisions. They consist of a database, software, and user interface. Innovations in ERP now support supply chain management by providing greater visibility across operations and ensuring production meets demand.

Enterprise Resource Planning, support system in

Digital Firms, And Innovations in the ERP to
Support Value Chain
Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)
It refers to an integrated enterprise-wide information system that
covers functional areas of an enterprise like logistics, Accounting,
Human resources, Finance etc… It is built on the principles of ‘Best
Practices’. The user of the package is to choose the best one which is
close to the requirement. Its functions are as follows-
1. Organization and integration pf operation processes and to
make optimum utilization of resources like men, material,
money, machine.
2. Facilitates single centralized database.
3. Facilitates common user interface for the entire enterprise.
4. Reduces the redundancy in entering data.

ERP Modules depend upon ERP packages. Some of the modules are
as follows-
1. ERP Finance Module
2. ERP HR Module
3. ERP Production Module
4. ERP Purchasing Module
5. ERP Inventory Module
6. ERP Sales and Marketing Module
SUPPORT SYSTEM IN DIGITAL FIRMS
The decision support system is an interactive information system
that analyses large volumes of data for informing business
decisions. It leverages a combination of raw data, documents,
personal knowledge, and/or business models to help users make
decisions. It also helps in the information system in the intelligence
phase where the objective is to identify the problem and then go to
the design phase for solution. There are 3 components of DSS.
They are as follows-
1. DSS database
The database consists of a variety of sources, including data
internal and external to the organization. The size of the DSS
database will vary based on need, from a small, standalone system
to a large data warehouse.

2. DSS software system

The software system is built on a model (including decision context
and user criteria). The number and types of models depend on the
purpose of the DSS. It has many models such as statistical,
sensitivity analysis, Forecasting and other models.
3. DSS user interface
The user interface is a key part of a decision support system
(DSS). A user interface is what managers see and use when they
interact with a DSS. It includes Dashboard and other user interfaces
that allows users to interact with and view results.
Innovation In ERP To Support Value Chain
Supply Chain management includes movements and storage of
raw materials, work-in process inventory, and finished goods
from point of origin to point of consumption. It is a cross-
functional approach and keeps a track of inventory and value of
material throughout the chain.

 The integration of Supply chain management and ERP

allows manufacturing and distribution businesses the ability to
gain greater visibility into all operations while increasing speed,
efficiency and overall customer satisfaction.
 An ERP system meant for supply chain management can
automatically create demand when orders are received.
 ERP ensures that production policies are consistent with
demand, replenishment is done at the right time, and inventory
is lean.
 These days many companies are offering Supply chain
management software that is equipped with supply chain
functionalities that are based on the ERP system to carry out
the execution of the planned tasks.
