B. Tech. (IV Semester) UES012: Engineering Materials
Time: 03 Hours, MM: 100 Name of faculty: OPP, KUS, PNS, CBN, BCM, LKB, DBD, SUM

Note: 1. Attempt all parts of questions together.

2. Answers should be precise and to the point.
3. Assume any missing data suitably.

1. (a) Define relaxation time of a solid in the context of anelastic behaviour of (8)
materials with an appropriate mathematical expression. Explain the stress-
strain curve under cyclic loading at different frequencies of BCC iron
containing small amount of carbon.
(b) The yield strength of a polycrystalline material increases from 120 MN m -2 to (6)
220 MN m-2 on decreasing the grain diameter from 40 pm to 10 p.m. Find the
yield stress for a grain size of ASTM 6.
(c) List the four strengthening methods for a real crystal and explain any one of (6)
them.

2. (a) Draw a labelled two component (A & B) hypothetical phase diagram from the (8)
following data:
i. Melting point of A and B are 350 °C and 220 °C respectively
ii. Maximum solid solubility of A in B is 15% and B in A is 1■; % at
invariant temperature i.e. 175 °C, the solubility drop down to r o in
both the cases at room temperature.
iii. The eutectic reaction takes place at 65% of B.
(b) From the above constructed phase diagram calculate the following: (8)
i. Composition of liquid and solid phases in hypoeutectic side at 200 °C.
ii. For overall composition of 25% of B, determine the fraction of liquid
and solid phase at 200 °C.
(c) Discuss the microstructural change that occurs at 25% of B during cooling (4)
from liquid state to solid.

3. (a) List different types of polarizations with their relevant relaxation times. (8)
Sketch the frequency dependence of polarization.
(b) Draw the hysteresis loop for a ferromagnetic material and the (8)
following terms:
(i) Coercivity (ii) Remnant magnetization,
(iii) Saturation magnetization (iv) (BH)max
(c) Draw the energy band diagram of conductors, semiconductors and (4)
insulators.

in the longitudinal direction of the fiber. The Young modulus of borosilicate
and polystyrene are 65 GN m -2 and 2.60 GN m-2 and specific gravity are 2.40
and 1.05, respectively.
(b) Differentiate between substructure and crystal structure. Also write most (6)
common measurement techniques by which these structures can be
determined.
(c) Burger vector is independent of burger circuit. Explain with suitable (6)
