Questions from Unit I

1. The Probabilities that the students A, B, C and D solve a problem are
1 2 1 1
3 , 5 , 5 , and 4 respectively. If all of them try to solve the problem what
is the probability that the problem is solved.
2. Three horses A, B and C are in a race. A is twice as likely to win as B
and B is twice as likely to win as C. What are the respective probabilities
of their winning?
(Ans. 1/7, 2/7 and 4/7)
3. Out of 52 well shuffled playing cards, two cards are drawn at random.
Find the probability of getting.
(a) One red and one black, (Ans. 26/51)
(b) Both cards of the same suit, (Ans. 4/17)
(c) One jack and other king, (Ans. 8/663)
(d) One red and the other of club. (Ans. 13/51)
4. If the letters of the word STATISTICS are arranged randomly then find
the probability that all the three T’s are together. (Ans. 1/15)
5. The odds against Manager X setting the wage dispute with the workers
are 8 : 6. What is the probability that the manager settles the dispute?
(Ans. 3/7)
6. The odds against the student X solving a problem in mathematics are 8:6
and odds in favour the student Y solving the same problem are 14:16. i)
What is the chance that the problem will be solved if they both try? ii)
What is the probability that both working independently will solve the
problem? iii) What is the probability that nether solves the problem?
7. Find the probability of the event A if
(a) Odds in favour of the event Ā are 1: 4 (Ans. 4/5)
(b) Odds against the event Ā are 7 : 2 (Ans. 7/9)
8. If two dice are thrown, what is the probability that sum is
(a) greater than 9, and (Ans. 1/6)
(b) neither 10 or 12. (Ans. 8/9)

9. A, B and C are three mutually exclusive and exhaustive events associated

with a random experiment. Find P(A) given that :
P (B) = 34 P (A) and P (C) = 13 P (B). (Ans. 1/2)

10. Bill and George go target shooting together. Both shoot at a target at
the same time. Suppose Bill hits the target with probability 0.7, whereas
George, independently, hits the target with probability 0.4. (a) Given
that exactly one shot hit the target, what is the probability that it was
George’s shot? (b) Given that the target is hit, what is the probability
that George hit it?

11. A bag contains 10 good and 4 defective items, two items are drawn one by
one without replacement. What is the probability that first drawn item
is defective and the second one is good? (Ans. 20/91)
12. An engineer wants to marry a girl having the following qualities. Good
looking- the probability of getting such a girl is 1 in 30. Handsome dowry-
probability of getting is 1 in 60. Engineering qualified- probability of
getting is 1 in 10. Find the chance of his getting married such a girl who
has all three qualities.
13. A person gets a construction job and agrees to undertake it. The comple-
tion of the job in time depends on whether there happens to be strike or
not in the company. There are 40% chances that there will be a strike.
Probability that job is completed in time is 30% if the strike takes place
and is 70% if the strike does not take place. What is the probability that
the job will be completed in time? (Ans. 54%)
14. There are two bags, first bag contains 3 red, 5 black balls and the second
bag contains 4 red, 5 black balls. One ball is drawn from the first bag
and is put into the second bag without noticing its colour. Then two balls
are drawn from the second bag. What is the probability that balls are of
opposite colours? (Ans.13/24)
15. In a certain species of rats, black dominates over brown. Suppose that
a black rat with two black parents has a brown sibling. (a) What is the
probability that this rat is a pure black rat (as opposed to being a hybrid
with one black and one brown gene)? (b) Suppose that when the black
rat is mated with a brown rat, all five of their offspring are black. Now,
what is the probability that the rat is a pure black rat?
