REFLECTION

In this module, I learned the primary feature of the functional-notional approach to

language teaching requires attention to learners' specific requirements. The approach explains
the reasons why language is employed. It highlights the communication objectives of a
speech act. A notion is a concept or idea which may be specific (vocabulary) or general (time,
size, and emotion). On the other hand, a function is a communicative act and uses language to
achieve a purpose (for example, promising, inviting, apologizing, greeting). The main
objective of a functional-notion approach is to explain the language in terms of what people
do with it, and how to use language to live. Furthermore, the functional categories are
personal, interpersonal, directive, referential, and imaginative. Also, criticisms of this
approach are order and no structures syllabus. In doing so, the functional-national approach
teaches students how to communicate effectively by using realistic and proper language.

I realized that this method focuses on the goals of the language used. It emphasizes
concepts and functions through five developmental factors. Based on the assumption that the
capacity to speak with others in actual, manner that is understandable is the fundamental aim
of most foreign language learning, the construction of a functional notional curriculum aids to
the objective of communication and interaction from the day of learning.

Functional-national is a language teaching style that, like others, falls under the
heading of a communicative approach. The technique emphasizes a strategy of structuring a
language curriculum. According to this approach, skill levels should be classified either on
what individuals want to accomplish with the language (functions) or on the meanings they
intend to transmit (notions). As a future educator, in teaching language, I will apply the
student-centered so that this approach assists students in identifying and analyzing their
requirements in order to create the syllabus as well as for us soon-to-be-teacher to be willing
to teach on the functions of speech. Hence, the functional-notional approach teaches students
how to communicate properly by using realistic and adequate language.
