CE3503 Lecture7

The document discusses the moment distribution method for analyzing indeterminate structural systems. It begins by introducing the method and explaining key steps like assuming each joint is fixed initially. It then defines important terms used in the method like fixed-end moments, member stiffness factors, joint stiffness factors, distribution factors, and carry-over factors. Finally, it provides examples applying the method to solve indeterminate beam structures.

MOMENT DISTRIBUTION METHOD

INDETERMINATE SYSTEMS

Force Method: Solves for unknown (redundant) forces using

compa<bility equa<ons.

Slope-deflec<on Method: Solves for unknown joint rota<ons and

deflec<ons using equilibrium equa<ons.

Moment Distribu<on Method: Solves the equa<ons by the method of

successive approxima<ons.

Sign Conven<on
Clockwise moments that act on the member are considered posi<ve
MOMENT DISTDIBUTION METHOD

•  The method begins by assuming each joint of a structure is fixed.

•  By unlocking and locking each joint in succession, the internal

moments at the joints are “distributed” & balanced un<l the joints
have rotated to their final or nearly final posi<ons.

MOMENT DISTDIBUTION METHOD

Fixed-end Moment (FEM)

The moments at the “walls” or fixed joints of a loaded member are called fixed-end
moments.
These moments can be determined from the table, depending upon the type of
loading on the member.
MOMENT DISTDIBUTION METHOD

Member S<ffness Factor

the amount of moment M required to rotate the end A of the beam
θA = 1 rad.

MOMENT DISTDIBUTION METHOD

Joint S<ffness Factor

If several members are fixed connected to a joint and each of their far
ends is fixed, then by the principle of superposi<on, the total s<ffness
factor at the joint is the sum of the member s<ffness factors at the
joint.

Carry-over Factor
Moment M at the pin induces a moment of M’ = 1/2 M at the wall.
The carry-over factor represents the frac<on of M that is “carried
over” from the pin to the wall. Hence, in the case of a beam with the
far end fixed, the carry-over factor is 1/2. The plus sign indicates both
moments act in the same direc<on.
MOMENT DISTDIBUTION METHOD

1.  Calculate s<ffness factors and distribu<on factors for various

members in a con<nuous beam.
2.  Define unbalanced moment at a rigid joint.
3.  Compute distribu<on moment and carry-over moment.
4.  Derive expressions for distribu<on moment, carry-over moments.
5.  Analyze con<nuous beam by the moment-distribu<on method.
MOMENT DISTDIBUTION METHOD-EXAMPLE 1

Consider the following indeterminate structure.

MOMENT DISTDIBUTION METHOD-EXAMPLE 1

Step 1. First, we convert the structure to a structure for which we know

the solu<on.
This can be done by conver<ng the structure to a single span beam
with fixed end supports with a distributed loading.
MOMENT DISTDIBUTION METHOD-EXAMPLE 1

Step 2. The structure is not the true structure. So, we eliminate the
’false’ fixity of the right hand support by applying a counterclockwise
moment at the right hand support equal in magnitude to the ’false’
clockwise 6 k-G moment.
MOMENT DISTDIBUTION METHOD-EXAMPLE 1

Step 3. Next we recall that when we apply a moment to the right end
of a fixed pinned beam a moment of magnitude ½ of the moment
applied at the pinned end is caused at the fixed end.
MOMENT DISTDIBUTION METHOD-EXAMPLE 1

Step 4. Now we sum up all the moments we have imposed on the

structure.
