The CycleTimer Program

The CycleTimer program was created to allow the user to measure actual times of various Earthmoving
operations. It has five different configurations for different types of operation.

Starting CycleTimer

Startup Dialog
When you first launch the program you will see the following dialog.
Creating a New Study

Study Types
Several of the study types have additional input dialogs that appear when you are creating the study.
Input the requested information and click OK to continue.
Loading Unit (With Trucks)
This study type measures the speed of the truck loading cycle. It is focused on the loader and does not
follow or time the trucks on the remainder of the cycle. We will use this study type to illustrate the
basic workings of CycleTimer. Other study types are similar, so we will primarily point out the
differences when we come to them.

Study Info Screen

Name Title of the study
Description Enter any information about the circumstances of the study that you might find
useful at a later time.
Units of Measure Specifies whether units of measure will be displayed as metric or English in this
study. The default value for this field is set in the Preferences window.
Display Times as Specifies whether times are displayed as minutes and seconds (1:55) or as
fractional minutes (1.92). Defaults to fractional minutes
Edit Mode Under most circumstances this should be left on "Normal". However in some
cases may want to correct errors in the timing process. If you select "Splits"
you will be able to change values on the Splits screen and if you select "Results"
you will be able to change the values on the Results screen.
Auto-Save If this box is checked, your study will periodically save to the disk drive while
you are timing.
Material Type Description of the material being loaded.
Material Density The two density fields represent the bank and loose densities of the material
being loaded.
Select Material This function allows you to select from a list of standard materials. If you are
handling a material not in this list, you may enter the values manually.
Blast A description of any blast associated with the loading process.
Loading Unit Model and/or description of the loader being timed.
Bucket Size Size of the loader bucket in CY/CM
Haul Unit Model and/or description of the truck being loaded
Body Size Volume in CY/CM of the truck being loaded
Filtering system Specifies whether to filter the loader cycles. If this is selected, all cycle
segments not inside a specified range will be ignored. See below for details.
Material is Loaded Select this option if the material has previously been dug and stockpiled.
at Loose Density

Filtering System
If this option is selected, all cycles which to not fall into the specified time ranges will be ignored. The
following dialog is available under "Tools/Edit Filter Parameters" to view or edit the ranges.
Time Screen

This screen is used to perform the timing. There are four target points -- Begin Dump, End Dump,
Begin Load, and End Load. If you want to start timing somewhere other that Begin Dump, click on the
heading of the column you want to start with. Record the first time by clicking "Start/Stop". Once
timing has started, record all other times by clicking "Register Time". When a new truck is being
positioned under the loader, click "New Truck". When you are done timing, click "Start/Stop" again to
finish the process. Once you have stopped, you will not be able to re-start.

Truck ID For the first row, and every time you click "New Truck", the truck ID field will
be available. If you wish, you may enter an identifier or description of the
truck being loaded.
Scale Payload Enter one or the other of these in Tons/MTons. This value is required for a
TPMS Payload complete calculation. You do not need to do this in real time. You can come
back later and enter Payloads after timing is complete.
Back Click this button if you inadvertently register a time. It will erase the last time
recorded
New Truck Click this button when one truck is loaded, and another is taking it's place.
Delay (1,2,3) Click any of these to indicate that the loading process has been interrupted or
delayed in some fashion. A number will be placed in the appropriate Delay
column. This is informational only. It does not affect the recording of times.
Delete Truck Cycle Deletes all cycles from the current timing point to the start of the current truck.
Pause Pauses the timing function. The button text will change to "Resume". When
you click resume, timing will begin again, ignoring time elapsed during the
pause.

Splits Screen

This screen shows detailed results of the study.

Results Screen

This screen shows a summary of the timing results. The left data column shows the actual results of
the study. The right shows what the results would have been at the standard exchange time of 0.7
minutes. Most of the values here are self-explanatory. The rest are described below.

Theoretical Loader Production Amount of production in Tons/MTons you would get per hour if
the loader operated continuously at the Average Cycle Time and
Avg Bucket Payload measured in the study.
Efficiency Actual measured production in Tons/Mtons per hour compared to
the theoretical value.
Cycle Time Distribution Graph

This graph shows the range of individual cycle times recorder in the study.
Number of Passes Distribution Graph

This graph shows the range of loader passes per truckload recorded in the study. This graph is
available only in Truck Loading studies.
Cycle segment times

This graph shows how much of the average cycle time is taken up by each of the cycle components.
This graph is available only in Truck Loading studies.
Payload Distribution Graph

This graph shows the range of truck Payloads measured in the study. This is available only in Truck
Loading Studies.
Dozing

When you select a Dozing study, the following dialog appears. If you do not want to record all target
points, uncheck them.
Study Info Screen

The Study Info Screen for Dozing studies is similar to the one for Truck Loading except that truck-
specific fields have been removed and "Blade Type" has been added.
Time Screen

In a Dozing study, the "New Truck" and "Delete Truck Cycle" buttons have been disabled.

Hauling Unit
The Hauling Unit Study is the other half of the Truck Loading study. It follows the truck instead of the
loader.

When you create a Hauling Unit Study, the following dialog appears. If you want to break the haul and
return down to segments and time those, select the "Time travel segments" option. If you do not, you
will time the entire haul and the entire return as a unit.
Travel Segments Screen

If you have selected "Time Travel Segments", use this screen to define them for both the haul and the
return.
Time Screen

This is the format of the Time screen for a Hauling Unit study. The scales columns are positioned
according to the choices you made on the initial dialog.
Time Travel Segments Screen

If you selected "Time Travel Segments", the following screen will appear at the appropriate point in the
cycle. Click "Register" at the end of each segment. When you are done the program will return to the
previous screen.
Splits Screen

Travel Summary Screen

This screen shows the segment details of your haul and return if you have selected the "Time Travel
Segments" option.
Results Screen
Hauling Unit (Full Cycle Only)

This study type measures a full cycle with no intermediate points.

Time Screen

The only point recorded for this study type is Begin Load. Payload must be entered for each complete
cycle.
Splits Screen
Results Screen
Trenching / Excavating

This study type times a digging operation where the material is not loaded onto trucks.
