(c) A steel ball weighing 128 lb is suspended from a spring, whereupon the spring

6. A 10 kg mass stretches a spring 4.9 m. This mass is removed and replaced with a 1 kg
mass. The entire system is placed in a medium that offers a damping force that is
numerically equal to 4 times the instantaneous velocity.
(a) Determine the equation of motion if the mass is initially released from rest from
a point 1 meter below the equilibrium position.
(b) Determine the maximum displacement that it will attain.
(c) Determine the frequency of the oscillation of this spring system.
(d) What is the long-time behaviour of the solution?

7. A mass, m1 of 9 kg is attached to a spring hanging from the ceiling, causing the spring
to stretch by 2.205 m. (Assume that gravitational acceleration is g = 9.8ms −2 )
(a) In a damped free motion of the spring-mass system, determine the value of a
damping constant that will cause the system to be critically damped.
(b) Suppose that the entire system is immersed in a medium that offers a damping
force that is numerically equal to three times the instantaneous velocity. At time
t = 0, an external force of 2sin 2t Newtons is applied to the system. Determine:
(i) the equation of motion, and
(ii) the amplitude and frequency of the steady state solution.

8. A series circuit consist of a resistor with R

(e) If the initial charge and current are both 0, find an expression for the charge at
time t.
(f) Determine the steady state solution and the steady state current for the LRC-
series circuit obtained in (e).
