Interview Report

I had the pleasure to interview a Glassboro police officer by the name of Sargent.

Charles, because I wanted to know more about the role of police officers and know more about

becoming a police officer once I graduate. I am a Law and Justice major, and I feel as though

this interview would be very beneficial for myself and others who are looking into becoming a

police officer. Being a police officer could be very stressful because they must protect and serve

the community as a whole and I know it could become very challenging for them. Many police

officers are looked down on because of things that happens around the world such as police

brutality and that is something that stops individuals from going for a job as a police officer

because they do not want to be look as like every other police which is a stigma that comes from

society, overall, we need the police for numerous things such as safety being the number one

priority. I first asked Sargent. Charles to please tell me about himself and his work background

as a police officer. I then asked him what’s the biggest law enforcement challenge he have seen

in the community. I wanted to know more about his strengths and weaknesses. Lastly another

question I asked Sargent. Charles is what advice would he give to incoming police officers or

individuals like me studying for Law and Justice. I conducted an in-person interview with

Sargent. Charles, we both met at Glassboro Police department and did the interview in an office
room. I first started off the interview with the consent forms for the research that is being done

and the audio which is being recorded for the research and explained to Sargent. Charles these

consent forms and the regulations for them before having him sign them off. I made an

appointment to meet with Sargent. Charles at a local coffee shop in Glassboro NJ while he was

on duty, I feel as though it was a great spot to meet with him because the coffee shop was not

busy, and it was mostly quiet throughout the interview. The interview went very well, I had a list

of question before hand to ask him and I had those questions on my laptop. The interview was

very organized, and I also took into consideration and obtaining information from Chambliss and

Schutt on chapter seven when he speaks on in-person interviews and how he stated that many

individuals who do in-person interviews has an increase in responses with the interview

participants compared to other methods of completing these research. I made sure my participant

was comfortable and able to answer and understand every question I had to offer. I made sure to

ask questions that were based off my research question and to learn more about his role as a

police office and the aspects that comes within being a police officer. I found a lot based on my

twenty-minute interview with Sargent. Charles, that has a lot to do with himself as a police

officer and the duty of a police officer. I learned that as a police officer the main biggest

challenge of dealing with the community is trying to relate with the community and vice versa

because there are different individuals within that community and the main aspect for police is to

help the community and keeping them safe. Some of Sargant. Charles strengths are being raised

in Glassboro community and knowing a lot of different individuals within that community it

makes his job a lot easier. His weakness would be sitting in an office at a desk because he is

more of a hands-on person and rather be in the community helping them out which could be very

understanding because being in one place for hours could be very stressful. It is also very
important for all police officers to stay organized with their paperwork’s because that is

something that could be important documents. Each police department has K9 dogs which are

dogs that are trained for drugs and protection of police officers. Sargent. Charles had two K9

dogs since he has been working with the department which has been since year 2000. The

Glassboro Police Department has in total of six K9 dogs which is okay because they only have

four police officers in the department now. My last main question that I asked Sargent. Charles

were what are some advice he would give incoming police officers or individuals who is looking

into the field, and he stated that you should start off young while you have the chance and

volunteering in the community and showing that you are dedicated and interested while you are

getting educated within the field. Everyone should volunteer within different departments in the

law field such as the fire department. The number one thing he stated was making sure you have

a clean background and be careful who you be around because with this job you must choose the

people to be around and make sure you’re not around criminal activities. Social media plays a

big part in the background check and everything we post or do on social media could pop up and

make sure it won’t affect the process of becoming a police officer.
