Line Modelling and Energization

The document describes modelling and energizing a 400kV transmission line in EMTP-RV. It involves: 1) Entering conductor and tower parameters to model the line; 2) Calculating line parameters using the modelling features in EMTP-RV; 3) Importing the calculated line parameters into the transmission line model; 4) Connecting a voltage source, switch and voltage meter to energize and monitor the line.

Transmission Line Modelling & Energization

Objective:
The objective is to calculate the transmission line parameters for single circuit
Transmission line and Energize the transmission line.
List of Inputs required for Modelling the Transmission line:
• Phase Conductor: ACSR Panther Conductor (DC Resistance: 0.067 Ohm/km,
Outer Diameter: 2.862cm)
• Ground Conductor: DC Resistance: 3.375 Ohm/km, Outer Diameter: 0.945 cm
• Tower Geometry: 400kV Single circuit Tower.

Modelling of Transmission Line:

Step-1: Drag and drop the line data from lines library into GUI.
Step-2: Double click on the line data and enter the parameters of conductor data and
transmission tower configuration represented in Figure 1.
Step-3: Enter number of conductors (wires): 4

Step-4 : Prepare the transmission line parameters required for the study.
• Conductor DC resistance and Outer diameter.
• Conductor coordinates.

Step-5 : Enter the line parameters to the Line Data. The Phase Number 1, 2, 3 in Line data
represents for the three Phases (A, B &C). P1, P2 & P3 in Figure 1 is represented as Phase
Number 1, 2, 3. Ground conductors are generally represented by phase number ‘0’.

Vertical Height at Midspan = Vertical height at tower – Sag.

For this line model, the transmission line height is considered as average height. Therefore,
the Vertical Height Midspan is same as vertical height at Tower.

Step 6: Go to Model tab.
• Select Model = FD
• Deselect check box “Find Model frequency automatically” and enter the
model frequency as “50 Hz”.
Step 7: Enter Length of Transmission Line
• Go to “Line Length” Tab
• Enter Line Length =400 km
• Soil Resistivity as “100 Ohm/km’’

Step 8: Generate Line Parameters

• Go to “Generate Data” Tab.
• Give the name of the Line Parameter output File.
• Select the Check box.
• Click “Ok”.

Step-9 : View the Output File.

• After Clicking “Ok” EMTP-RV calculates the line parameters and you can see the
status of your Line parameters as shown below.

• If you click on the output file, it opens normally in Notepad.

• The output file contains the both input parameters and Phase impedance matrix and
sequence impedance.

Step-10 : Import Line parameters
The calculated line parameters are saved to a text file. The parameters are linked to the
transmission line model for performing the simulations.
• Lines Library →Drag & Drop “Frequency dependent line” from lines library to GUI.
• Double click on the FD line and click “select data file”.
• Select the generated file name in line data and click ok. It loads the transmission line
parameters automatically.
