The sustainable development goals are set to focus on bettering the

social, economic and environmental aspect of this world.

Lets start by looking at 4 societal goals
GOAL 1- No poverty
Poverty is linked to a lack of adequate money and resources to support a
stable lifestyle. To create long-term jobs and promote equality,
economic growth must be inclusive. Goal 1 technically concentrates
on eradicating poverty through a system of linked methods, such as
the promotion of social security systems and good jobs.
Even though the aim is to end poverty in all its forms everywhere by
2030. Within every goal there are targets to meet before the aim is
accomplished.
Also, note that for all 17 goals there are a total of 169 targets and the
progress towards these targets are tracked by 232 unique indicators.
To break it down, targets are normally measurable (“all people”, “at
least by half”, “for all). Indicators then show the measurement by which
those targets can be judged either a success or a failure.
For instance, “End poverty in all its forms everywhere”. This is
supported by seven targets and 12 indicators, including: (they`re
displayed on the screen) just to mention a few
Target 1.1: By 2030, eradicate extreme poverty for all people
everywhere, currently measured as people living on less than $1.25
(converted to Guyanese dollar that is $209.24). a day

Indicator 1.1.1: Proportion of population below the international poverty

line, by sex, age, employment status and geographical location
(urban/rural)
Target 1.2: By 2030, reduce at least by half the proportion of men,
women and children of all ages living in poverty in all its dimensions
according to national definitions

Indicator 1.2.1: Proportion of population living below the national

poverty line, by sex and age

Indicator: 1.2.2: Proportion of men, women and children of all ages

living in poverty in all its dimensions according to national definitions

If you notice… The targets and indicators are measured on a national

level, not just international. This allows room for differences between
countries. Although target 1.1 refers to extreme poverty, currently
measured as $1.25 a day, target 1.2 focuses on “national definitions”.
Example: Switzerland and Kenya have very different national
definitions of poverty but, under the targets for Sustainable
Development Goal 1, both are encouraged to half the proportion of
people affected.
I trust that, that explanation of how to interpret target and indicator were
of help, because due to limited time we won’t be able to through all
now, you would have to do so at your own given time.
Progress: Based on the report published by the United Nations in 2017, there are proof that this
development program was showing progress. The COVID-19 outbreak is undoing the trend of poverty
reduction, with tens of millions of people at risk of being driven back into extreme poverty. In 2018, 8%
of employed people and their families lived in extreme poverty around the world and Guyana being
amongst them. One out of every five youngsters are living below the poverty line.)

GOAL 2
This aim is to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition
and promote sustainable agriculture
This goal is important because Extreme food insecurity continues to
be an obstacle to long-term development and a trap from which people
are unable to easily escape. Hunger and malnutrition lead to more people
who are less productive, more prone to disease, and so unable to earn
more and improve their lives.)
Progress?
In the world, 2 billion people do not have daily access to safe, nutritious, and adequate food., the
pandemic has become an additional threat to the food systems.. Food scarcity and high food prices have
been worsened by civil unrest and diminishing food output. Agriculture investment is crucial here for
decreasing hunger and poverty, enhancing food security, creating jobs, and increasing disaster and shock
resistance.

GOAL 3:
AIM : Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages
IMPORTANCE: Building flourishing communities requires ensuring
healthy lives and encouraging well-being. Sustainable development
requires ensuring healthy lifestyles and encouraging well-being for all
people of all ages. Life expectancy has increased significantly, and some
of the frequent killers related with child and maternal mortality have
been reduced significantly.
PROGRESS?
There has been significant success in improving access to safe drinking water and sanitation, as well as
lowering malaria, TB, polio, and the spread of HIV/AIDS. However, much more work is required to
completely eradicate a wide variety of illnesses and to treat a large range of chronic and new health
challenge
WHAT CAN WE DO?
It takes a tremendous commitment to ensure that everyone lives a healthy life, but the advantages far
outweigh the costs. People who are healthy are the cornerstone for a strong economy.
A few ways to achieve this are:

1. Immunize – it is one of the most effective and cost-efficient health treatments in the world
2. You may promote community awareness on the significance of good health, healthy lifestyles,
and people's right to adequate health care, particularly for the most vulnerable, such as women
and children.
3. You may also hold your government, local leaders, and other decisionmakers responsible for their
promises to enhance people's health and access to healthcare.
GOAL4:
AIM is to Ensure inclusive and quality education for all and
promote lifelong learning
this is important because Education is a key to escape poverty and
enabling upward social mobility. Education aids in the reduction of
inequities and the attainment of gender equality, as well as the
promotion of tolerance and more peaceful society.
There are 2 factors that are likely to affect this goal
1. Inequality - lack of access to skills and limited opportunities in the labour market for young
women.
2. Covid 19- As the COVID-19 epidemic spread over the world, countries declared temporary
school closures, affecting more than 91% of children globally. Close to 1.6 billion children
and teens were out of school by April 2020.

Now i`ll hand you over to Miss Sargent, who will be touching on
Goals 5-8

Questions for class:

What is the role of Social protection in Goals 1 and 2?

.
Social protection is critical to accelerate progress, )or we can say it is the
catalyst) toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals and ensure
that no one is left behind. National programs to foster human
development, political stability, and inclusive growth all include social
protection as a major component.
I agree with you,and to add. In Article 22 of the Universal Declaration
of Human Rights states “Everyone, as a member of society, has the right
to social security” .For people all across the world, the COVID-19
epidemic will have both immediate and long-term economic impacts.
For minimizing the effects and preventing many individuals from sliding
into poverty, strong social safety measures are required.
How do you think social policy plays a role in these sustainable
development goals?
Because it is funda

mentally a cross-cutting exercise, social policy, which is a collective

intervention in the economy aimed at improving access to adequate and
secure livelihoods, income, and social services, can be a crucial building
block in developing an integrated strategy for sustainable development.
Its numerous roles bring together economic and social concerns: the
creation of products and services, security from fear, care for the weak
and dependent, wealth and income redistribution, and social cohesion,
all of which are vital to achieving the society we desire.
That so true. And Like I mentioned before: 2030 Agenda seeks to
strengthen the social, economic and environmental dimensions
of sustainable development
At the national, regional, and global levels, implementing the 2030
Agenda demands a more comprehensive, coherent, and integrated
strategy. Inter-linkages within the social sector, as well as between the
social, economic, and environmental elements of sustainable
development, must be addressed in policies to execute the 2030 Agenda.
Similarly, existing organizations or institutional mechanisms operating
in the field of social development (we spoke about 1 that is the social
protection) they will need to alter or expand their scope of operation to
fit the SDGs' new objectives. In other words, through integrating social
policy/perspectives into broader and more complex policy-making
processes, and vice versa, incorporating economic and environmental
perspectives into social policy-making.
