PERSONAL STATEMENT 1

My name is Yijin Wang. I graduated in 2015 with a Bachelor’s degree from the
Management School in Xian Jiao Tong University with a GPA of over 3.8/4.0, which
provides a leverage for my further application in a related field.

The power to transform societies and revolutionize contemporary lives lies within the
knowledge of big data (Pichai, 2017). The traditional manufacturing industry in the future
should not only rely on the production of goods, all the machines must have the ability to
think and communicate, and the whole industry will finally become the end user of
internet and big data (Ma, 2016). Taking a look at all the global enterprises in the world
today, most of them enhance customer behaviors and working efficiency by the analysis
of big data. All these notions and the recognition to the world’s development trend has
inspired me to pursue an advanced degree in Data Analysis.

Given my excellent academic achievement in numerical-related discipline in my

undergraduate level, I feel I have reached a point where I now want to combine my
considerable experience with a strong academic background to achieve my ambitions in
order to create a more effective society. Data Analysis is undoubtedly a developing sector
within financial and business management; health; government; and even intelligence. It
is my belief that data analysis will become an integral part of doing business in the future.
This is because data analysis is useful in understanding what we do good or bad in
today’s market as well as predicting future trends.

I believe my strong academic foundation and strong mathematical prowess have prepared
me for this noble endeavor. As an undergraduate I discovered my strong affinity towards
financial analysis and that is why I am interested in data analysis. My analytical ability
was further strengthened when I worked as Financial Advisor in the Bank of China from
March 2014 to August 2015. I believe the course offered by the George Mason University
will enhance my skills in the R language and other dimensions of data analysis. I believe
the skills I will learn will build on my foundational understanding of Excel and other
software by allowing me to build a model analyzing the optimal solutions.
PERSONAL STATEMENT 2

I am interested in advancing my career as a Data Analyst because the ultimate goal is to

work as a consultant for the ‘Big Four’. I believe an opportunity in the Data Analysis
Program at George Mason University is a step in the right direction towards attaining my
career goals. Primarily, the course will provide me a deeper understanding of what data,
and the relevant methods I can use in making data-driven decisions. Secondly, the course
offers me the opportunity to take a concentration in Business Analytics, Data Mining,
Statistical Analytics, and Applied Analytics. I am very excited about exploring these
options as I delve deeper into data analysis and my chosen career. I believe the choices
will become clearer as I interact with the learning material. Thirdly, the versatility of the
program means I can learn more knowledge in business and finance related fields, as well
as in marketing, government agencies, and intelligence sector. In addition, the proximity
of the Campus to Washington DC means I have the opportunity to start my career early
through internships and as I network with other executives in the field.

My projections for the future are all very positive and I believe that the industry has
considerable potential for continued growth, development and subsequent expansion. It is
my most sincere belief that pursing a Master’s degree in Data Analysis from George
Mason University is an outstanding opportunity and a very wise choice. Most
importantly, the fact that I will be studying in a university in the US means that my global
overview will be greatly enhanced while allowing me to enjoy an ethnically diverse and
cosmopolitan environment that few get to experience. I am extremely optimistic that this
Master’s degree is perfectly aligned with my long-term goals and sincerely hope that my
application to the George Mason University will be looked upon favorably.
