Assignment Merool Maam

The document discusses different types of structural supports and analysis: 1. Fixed supports resist both translation and rotation with 3 reactions, while roller supports allow horizontal movement and rotation with 1 vertical reaction. Hinge supports allow rotation but not translation with 2 reactions. 2. Continuous beams rest on multiple supports that may be on the same horizontal plane. The example beam has spans of 3m and 9m between columns. 3. A Warren truss with verticals is presented, containing isosceles and equilateral triangles connected by 29 members at 16 joints, with 1 degree of static indeterminacy.

COURSE CODE : ADVANCED METHODS OF STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

COURSE CODE : RDMCECE02

PREPARED BY : GATHA S GIRIDHAR

TYPES OF SUPPORT

1. FIXED SUPPORT

Fig 1. Flag pole

 Fixed support is restrained against both translation and rotation

 Reaction =3 (horizontal , vertical , moment )

 Degree of freedom =0

2
2 ROLLER SUPPORT

Fig 2. Chair Fig 3. Roller skating board

 In roller support reactions will be perpendicular to the surface

on which roller are supported
 In the above figure chair can have 360 degree rotation and
horizontal movement but it cannot move in vertical direction

 In case of roller skating board it can move in horizontal

direction and can have 180 degree rotation

 Reactions = 1 ( vertical )

 Degree of freedom = 2 ( rotation and horizontal )

3
3 .HINGE SUPPORT

Fig 4.Stapler Fig5. Dustbin

 Hinge support is restrained against translation but not

rotation

 In the above figure though stapler has 180 degree rotation

due to the presence of spring present in the some of the
reactions are restricted and the dustbin has 90 degree
rotation
 Reaction = 2 ( Horizontal and Vertical )

 Degree of freedom = 1 ( rotation )

4
4. GUIDED ROLLER SUPPORT

Fig 6. Gate

 In guided roller support reactions will be perpendicular to

the surface it can also resist moment
 In the above figure gate moves only in horizontal
direction and restrict vertical movement and rotation

 Reactions = 2

 Degree of freedom =1

5
CONTINUOUS BEAM

 Continuous beam are beams with more than 2 supports

 It rest upon several supports which may be on the same

horizontal plane

 The clear span between the outer rectangular column and

circular column is 3m and between 2 circular column is
9m

 Dimension of beam is 625×300mm

 Dimension of column is 600×600mm

6
 Dimension of circular column with diameter 650 mm

TRUSS

s

WARREN TRUSS WITH VERTICALS

 It contains a series of isosceles and equilateral triangles

 To increase the span length of the truss bridge verticals

are added to warren truss

 In the above truss there are 7 purlins

 Span = 7m

 Members =29
 Joints =16

 Static indeterminacy = (R –e )+ m – (2j – 3)

= (4 – 3) +29- (2 x16 – 3)
=1
 Kinematic indeterminacy = 28
