16-Profibus DP Cabling Rules

The document outlines 4 rules for cabling a Profibus DP network: 1. Cables between devices must be at least 1 meter to avoid signal deformation from capacitance. 2. Minimum distances between Profibus cables and power cables are 20cm for high voltage and 10cm for low voltage to prevent interference. 3. Grounding must provide 360 degree shielding and avoid loops, with grounding in connectors, D-sub connections, and every second cubicle. 4. Maximum cable lengths per segment must be followed based on transmission speed to ensure signal quality.

Cabling Rules

Profibus DP Cabling Rules.ppt 1-Dec-15 1

• Profibus DP cable structure
• Cable length between devices
• Distance to other cables
• Grounding
• Maximum cable length per segment

• Two signal wires
–B
–A
• Strengthening material
Foil (f>50Mhz)
B
– Makes the cable form round
– Holds the wires in place
• Foil
– Protects against EM interference
– For frequencies above 50MHz
– Conducting material only on the top side
• Braid
– Protects against EM interference
– For frequencies under 50MHz A
Braid (f<50Mhz)

• On high signal frequencies the DEVICE
capacitance of devices connected to
Profibus causes notches in the signal C  35 pF
voltage.
– On high frequency capacitive impedance
is very small.
• When several devices are connected
one after another with short cables
capacitances and notches add up
resulting in signal deformation.

A Profibus cable between two devices 1m

RULE 1
must always be at least 1 meter long!

This ensures that there is enough propagation delay to eliminate the

effect of capacitive voltage drops in the signal.

PROBLEMS!

• The protective shielding on bus cable is not enough to protect signal wires
against all EM interference.
• Air gaps between bus cables and high power lines are also needed.

Minimum distance between:

RULE 2 - bus cable and a power cable (  380 V) is 20 cm
- bus cable and a control cable (  230 V) is 10 cm.

 If grounded metal plates are put between the bus cable and a
power cable the air gap can be reduced.
 Installing the bus cable next to a large ground surface makes the
protection better and air gaps can be reduced.

• Example:
– Not enough air gap between bus cable
and a power cable feeding a machine
– When machine is operating signal SIGNAL
becomes strongly deformed DEFORMED!

• The shielding of the cable reduces capacitively coupled interference.
• Capacitive coupling induces different voltages on different parts of the
shield.
• Because the shield has resistance these voltages cause currents in the
shield.
• These currents couple with signal wires causing signal deformation.
• Best protection is to make shield resistance to ground as small as
possible.

• When designing grounding it is
important to avoid ground loops.
Ground loop:
• If shield current gets high and signal
becomes deformed it is possible to use CUBICLE PROFIBUS CUBICLE
an extra ground cable.
– This cable should be right next to the
Profibus cable to avoid any current
loops.

• Shield grounding only protects the bus

lines if the grounding is well connected
to ground. DEVICE
• Inside a sub-D connector there is a
360° connection to device ground.
– Device must be well grounded in order
to use the sub-D connector’s grounding.

Inside e-room and cubicles, there must be:
1.) 360° grounding inside sub-D connectors
RULE 3
2.) grounding in DAV connections
3.) 360° grounding coming and leaving the cubicle row
4.) 360° grounding in every second cubicle.

• Maximum cable length per segment depends on baud rate and cable
electrical characteristics.
• Stub lines are not recommended with baud rates higher than 1500kbit/s.
• Stub lines are added to the total cable length.
• Following cable lengths are only valid with a cable that fulfills all Profibus
standard specifications.
