Module 4: Alkenes: Nomenclature, Preparation and Reaction

Introduction
All of the things in our surroundings that plays an important role in our life, we
sometimes don’t notice the significance of it. Each of the things that we see and use every day
are having an explanation why they are existed. Alkenes are what we are using today like the
manufacturing of all plastics like polythene for making buckets, bowls and bags. Alkenes are
unsaturated hydrocarbons. The presence of carbon-carbon double bond is the salient feature of
this group of compounds. The double bond is greatly responsible for the physical and chemical
properties of these compounds.

Objectives:
At the end of this activity, the students will be:
1. Discuss the distinguishing features of alkenes.
2. Name alkenes and its nomenclature.
3. Identify the reactions of alkenes.

MOTIVATION
Are you aware in the use of hydrocarbon: alkenes in everyday life of people? In example
of this is the things we are using that keeping us fulfilled and contented, Also the medicine are
one of the example that is also an important thing in our life because it keep us safe from any
diseases.

ABSTRACTION
Alkenes contains a carbon-carbon double bond. At room temperature, alkenes exist in all
three phases, solid, liquid and gases. Melting and boiling points of alkenes are similar to that of
alkanes, however, isomers of cis alkanes have lower melting points than that of Tran’s isomers.
Moreover, when it comes to naming an alkenes and its nomenclature the higher alkenes and
alkynes are named by counting the number of carbons in the longest continuous chain that
includes the double or triple bond and appending an –ene (alkene) or –yne (alkyne) suffix to the
system name of the unbranched alkane having that number of carbons. And last is the reactions
of alkenes, we can say the results of the reaction is that addition reaction to C=C double bond. In
addition reaction, a small molecule is added to multiple bond and one bond is converted to two
bonds.
ENRICHMENT
Moreover, hydrocarbons are the simplest organic compounds, but they have interesting
physiological effects. These effects depends on the size of the hydrocarbons molecules and
where on or in the body they are applied. Some of those hydrocarbons plays an important role in
medical field, some carbon atoms are gases or light liquids that acts as an anesthetic.

Evaluation
Think of these questions:
1. Define concisely what is alkenes?
2. What are the importance of alkenes in our daily?
3. Briefly identify the important distinctions between a straight-chain alkane and a branched-
chain alkane.

Answer:
1. Alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons. The presence of carbon-carbon double bond is the
salient feature of this group of compounds. The double bond is greatly responsible for the
physical and chemical properties of these compounds.
2. All of the synthetics that we are using in our daily life are a part of alkene, manufacture of
polystyrene used in making car battery cases and parts of the refrigerator.
3. Straight-chain alkanes and branched-chain alkanes have different properties as well as
different structure.
