INTERNET
• Internet is the largest network that links millions of computers with
each other to share information across the world.

• The biggest advantage of the internet is that you can access it


from a computer or mobile device anywhere: at home, at office, at
school or at the restaurant.
HISTORY OF INTERNET

• ARPANET (Advanced Research Project Agency Network) was the


first form of network.
• It was set up by the US Department of Defense.
• It was developed for sharing information in research and
development in science and technology.
• Used by government and scientists.
• Was later used to spread education.
• Eventually, grew bigger and led to present form of Internet.
ADVANTAGES OF THE INTERNET

• Can get information on any topic.

• Can send and receive e-mail messages


very quickly.

• Can play online games.

• Can listen to music and watch movies


DISADVANTAGES OF THE INTERNET

• All information you get on the internet may not


be 100% accurate.
• People spend more time on the internet surfing
irrelevant websites which may affect their work
or study.
• Personal information can be misused on the
internet.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE INTERNET

To use Internet, you need :


 A Computer or a Mobile

 Modem

 Internet connection

 ISP
MODEM

• Is a short form for Modulator / Demodulator.

• Is a device that receives data from the internet and sends data

from your computer to the internet.


INTERNET CONNECTION

• BROADBAND is a high speed internet connection.

• With broadband access we use a computer, a digital modem and

a broadband line.
INTERNET SERVICE PROVIDER
• The internet connection is provided by different companies called

ISP.

• ISP allow you to use Internet on monthly charge. eg Airtel, tatasky,

BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited)


SEARCH ENGINE

• Search engine is a program that searches through the collection of

Web pages for a particular information.

• Popular search engines are Google, Bing & Yahoo.


WEB BROWSER

• A Web browser or browser, is a software used to access the Internet

• Examples:
• Microsoft Internet Explorer

• Mozilla Firefox

• Google Chrome

• Microsoft Edge
 WWW – (World Wide Web): it contains millions of websites that provide
information in the form of text, animation, pictures and videos.

 Webpage – it is an information displayed in the form of a page on the


internet.

 Website – It is a collection of related web pages that provide information.

 Homepage – It is the first page that appears when we open a website.

 E-mail – Email stands for electronic mail. An email address


defines the location of an individual’s mailbox on the internet.
COMPUTER VIRUS

• A computer virus is a type of malicious code or program written to alter the


way a computer operates and is designed to spread from one computer to
another.

• It is a program that secretly enters into the computer system in order to


corrupt and destroy the data.

• There are several ways by which a computer is infected with a virus. Some of
these are: Internet, Junk mail, pendrive etc.
SYMPTOMS OF A COMPUTER VIRUS

• Unusually slow performance.

• Frequent crashes.

• Unknown or unfamiliar programs that start up when you turn on your


computer.

• Mass emails being sent from your email account.

• Changes to your homepage or passwords.


PROTECTING COMPUTER FROM VIRUSES:

• Install an anti-virus software on your computer and update it from time to


time. eg – Norton, Quickheal, Avira etc.

• Never open an email from an unknown person. It may harm your system.
