Directions:
1. Read the instructions properly.
2. Analyze each problem carefully. Calculate and present your solutions neatly and clearly. Use
long size bond paper. Draw the free body diagram as much as possible to support your
solution. For items with calculations, put your answers in the box. Make assumptions when
necessary.
3. The exam is only good for 3 hours from 9:00 am to 12:00 nn today, October 17, 2021.
However, to compensate for any problems (e.g., power interruption, poor internet
connection, etc.) that might occur during this period, there will be an allowance of 6 hours
for the submission before the deadline.
4. Whichever is smaller, a deduction of 20% of the total score or 10 points per hour late will be
penalized for late submission. No submission will be accepted beyond the exam date.
5. A maximum of 20% deduction of the total score will also be penalized for not following the
instruction and proper formatting including blur image, too many erasures, missing data
below (ID No, Name, etc.) and illegible penmanship.
6. NO credits shall be given once the submission is not an original work.
7. Only word file is permitted. If the size of the document is beyond 10 MB, two submissions
will be accepted.
8. Upload your file(s) to MOLE 3.0. Submission through email will not be accepted.

PRELIM EXAM
Problem 1: A 500 mm x 500 mm column carries a total live load of P= [ Birthday ] ×50 kN and
a total dead load of Q= [ Birth month ] ×100 kN. The column is to be supported by a rectangular
spread footing whose width is limited to 2 m and whose bottom is 2 m below the ground surface.
Allowable soil bearing capacity at the base of the footing is 250 kPa. Unit weight of soil above
footing is 16 kN/m3 and unit weight of concrete is 23.5 kN/m 3. Assume f’c = 28 MPa and fy =
275 MPa. Assume thickness of footing to be 600 mm, determine the following:
a. Required effective depth of footing based on wide beam shear in mm. (10 pts)
b. Required effective depth of footing based on punching shear in mm. (10 pts)
c. Required number of 25-mm bars needed along short direction of footing. Provide layout.

Problem 2: A wall footing is subjected to axial loads and moments. Other pertinent data
are tabulated below. Design the wall footing using 2015 NSCP. Given the following data,
design the isolated rectangular footing. Make assumptions when necessary.
Axial dead load P DL = 400 kN/m
Axial live load P¿ = x kN/m
Applied dead load moment M DL = 100 kN∙m/m
Applied live load moment M¿ = 150 kN∙m/m
Compressive strength of concrete f c' = 28 MPa
Yield strength of steel fy = 375 MPa
Unit weight of concrete yc = 24 kN/m3
Unit weight of soil ys = 16 kN/m3
Allowable soil pressure qa = 250 kPa
Diameter of bars to be used db = 28 mm
Depth of foundation Df = set m
The variable x is equal to 200 + sum of your birth month and day.
a. Determine the effective soil pressure.
b. Determine the minimum width of footing such that the effective soil pressure
will not be exceeded.
c. Determine the required effective depth and the thickness of footing.
d. Determine the spacing of reinforcements.
e. Prepare the schedule of the footing design.
