Organizational Behavior
Motivation is an important piece on today’s workplace. A good manager is the one who
encourages his employee to work hard, to accomplish the tasks that are assigned to them. In
order to accomplish this task and keep subordinates happy, managers need to create a work
environment that respond positively to the individual needs. It is important to let the employees
know the consequence of poor performance and undesirable behavior. There is a clear
understanding between managers and subordinates. Motivation across cultures as reward is not
the same in another culture. It is important to keep this in mind to avoid being parochial or
ethnocentric by assuming the same thing in the same ways motivates all cultures.
Global Managers should know how to conduct business across borders. They need to
think with a worldview. It is important to be multi-lingual to be able to communicate with his
subordinates. The most important thing is to be able to deal with diversity, beliefs, values,
behaviors, and practice. The issue with Motivation is when it is not applied equally. In some
cases favoritism exists. The managers does not act fairly when it time to recognize the employee
for the job well done. They should understand the reason why the deadline was not met and then
make constructive critics. Managers should play a fair game with the entire group to avoid
unhappy members. As we know if the employees are unhappy the customer will suffer the
consequence.
Organizations are facing challenges in forming teams. It is important that the group work
well together to utilize all the inputs and to end up with the desired outcome. The natures of
group are important resources that are good for both organizations and their members. They help
organizations to accomplish talks. Also you can have a high quality workforce by satisfying
needs of their members. The effective groups are those that achieve high levels of task
performance, member satisfaction and team viability. Task performance and effective group
achieves its performance in the standard sense of quality, and timeliness of work results. Team
members are satisfied once their participation and experiences are positive and meet important
personal needs.
In order to form a group, managers/leaders need to go through the five stages, to ensure
all this steps are clear to all the members: forming stages to getting to know each other, norming
stage building relationships and working together, performing stage maturation in relationship
and task performance and adjourning. Once the team has gone through these stages, they will
have a better understanding what the individual roles and responsibility and the expected
outcome. The advantage of teamwork is that the expertise, experience and knowledge come
together and tasks can be accomplished on time.
On the other hand, the disadvantage of working with team is the potential problems if the
group members not working together to meet the common goals. There are some issues for
example, if directions how to perform a tasks are not well defined or the team members are not
pulled together to get the work done or not meeting the deadline. I have seeing this happened in
my own experience. The downside is these members that don’t work well with others or not
meeting the deadline, they won’t be selected again to be part of team due to lack of effort,
difficulties working with others.
High performance teams have special characteristics that allow them to excel at
teamwork and achieve special performance advantages. The high performance teams have
strong core value that help guide their attitudes and behaviors in directions consistent with
teams purpose. Such values act as an internal control system for a group or team that can
substitute for outside direction and supervisory attention. Also, high performance teams turn a
general sense of purpose into specific performance. This gives general directions to a team and
commitment to specific results. For example, reducing cycle time in manufacturing, which will
yield constant savings? This is a big deal in today’s organizations. Companies are looking for
continuing improvements on how to optimize the processes to improve quality and cost saving.
High performance teams are formed by the high level of mangers/leaders and senior
managers, in some cases by the CEO of the company. These team members have right mix of
skills, including technical skills, problem solving and decision-making skills and interpersonal
skills. They possess creativity. All these skills and creativity are important to the organization to
be competitive.
High Performance Leadership is another key element of organizational Behavior.
Leadership and Management as we all know has been a controversy where leaders are different
from managers or whether management is different from leaders. The difference is that the role
of Management is to promote stability or to enable the organizations to run smoothly. The role of
Leadership is to promote adaptive or useful changes. But both of these roles can be performed
by either one of them.
People in Leadership positions have big responsibilities with the organization, public and
with the stakeholders, therefore, they need to constantly strive to find and solve problems among
employees. It is important to keep in mind that if these leaders put employees first, the company
will have a better chance of keeping the employees in their job since the employees will feel that
the company cares for them. It is a way to build loyalty.
