SPSS Assignment 1 Applied Statistics 2, 2019/20: Tutorial Group: Team Number: 8 Student 1 Name

This document contains a student's work on an assignment for an applied statistics course. The assignment involves analyzing supermarket spending data and engine fuel efficiency data using SPSS. For the supermarket data, the student calculates confidence intervals and performs a hypothesis test to determine if average spending is less than $50. For the engine data, the student performs F-tests to check if variances and group means are equal. The key results are that average spending is found to be less than $50, variances are equal, and group means are equal.

SPSS Assignment 1
Applied Statistics 2, 2019/20

Use SPSS for the computations. Put your answers in this template and hand it in during the tutorial in
week 3.

Do not simply copy & paste SPSS output, except for plots. Instead write down only the relevant
values, and always motivate your answers where necessary.

Exercise 1

a.
H0: Average amount spent by consumers in a supermarket is 50 dollars.
Ha: Average amount spent by consumers in a supermarket is smaller than 50 dollars.

b. The mean is 44,6636 and the standard deviation is 27,14205

c. The 95% confidence interval has a lower boundary of 36,9499 and an upper boundary of 52,3733
d. The test performed in spss gives a P-value smaller than 0.000. As this value is smaller than the
significance value of 5% we reject H0. In common speech this means the average amount spent by
consumers in a supermarket is indeed smaller than 50 dollars.

e.

The graph above shows the distribution of the data in a histogram. From this graph we conclude that
the dataset is skewed to the right. Therefore, the normal distribution does not progvide4 a reasonable
approximation. This proves our conclusion from the previous question. The distribution is skewed to
the right. The graph clearly shows that most consumers spend less than 50 dollars. Therefore the
graph proves our conclusion.
Exercise 2

a. H0 : The variances of the two samples are equal.

Ha : The variances of the two samples differ.

The Levene test computes a p value of 0.506. This value is much higher than the significance value of
0,05. Therefore, we do not reject H0. In common speech this indicates that variances of the new type
of engine and the variance of the old type of engine are equal.

b. H0 : The mean amount of litres used per 100km is equal for both the new and old engine.
Ha : The mean amount of litres used per 100km is smaller for the new engine than for the old engine.
We used the one-way anova test to test this hypothesis. This test used a f distribution. Doing so we
concluded that the degrees of freedom between groups is 1 and the degrees of freedom within groups
is 40. The p-value computed using this test is 0,062. This value is larger than the five percent
significance value. Therefore, at the five percent significance value we do not reject the null
hypothesis. In common speech this means that the mean amount of fuel used per 100km is equal for
the new and old engines.
