HE I Assignment
HE I Assignment
1. Consider the horizontal alignment of an existing road shown in Fig. below. Do you consider this
alignment adequate for an operating speed of 100kph? If not, where and what are the design
inadequacies?
2. A proposed highway has two tangents of bearings N 45.91°E and N 1.375°W. The highway
design engineer, attempting to obtain the best fit for the simple circular curve to join these tangents,
decides that the external ordinate is to be 13 m. The PI is at station 1 + 994
Determine:
(a) The central angle of the curve
(b) The radius of the curve
(c) The length of the tangent of the curve
(d) The station of the PC
(e) The length of the curve
(f) The station of the PT

3. The PI of two tangents of highway is located in lake. Stations A and B are selected to replace
the inaccessible PI.
4. The driver of a vehicle travelling 60 km/hr up a gradient requires 9 m less to stop after he applies
brakes, as compared to a driver travelling at same speed, down the same gradient. Assume f = 0.40.
What is the gradient?

1. Compute curve elevation and offset from tangents at 25 m intervals, including full stations, for
300m vertical curve joining + 1.5 % grades with – 3.3 % grade. Assume the PI is at station 100 +
00 and elevation 600m. Results should be in tabular form, with columns for stations, tangent
elevations, offsets, and curve elevations starting at the PVC and ending at PVT of the curve.
2. A road contains a vertical curve starting at station 60 + 00 and ending at station 68 + 00. The
elevation at the beginning of the curve (BVC) is 170m. The grade prior to the BVC is – 1.5%. Just
after the end of curve (EVC), the grade is + 2.5%. What is the centerline elevations of the road at
every 50 m from the BVC to the EVC?
