GLOBALIZATION

Directions: Answer the following questions based on your understanding of

our modules on Introduction to Globalization and Economic Globalization (Part
1). Do not submit answers directly lifted from any internet sources. Post your
answers directly under this thread (Attached files shall not be considered). Ten
(10) points each.

1. Is it correct to equate globalization with Westernization? Explain.

No, it is NOT correct to equate globalization with Westernization because

as it is said by the definition of Westernization in the modules uploaded,
westernization is using western values, beliefs, or practices. Some says that it is
where everyone became a western’s slave. Comparing the definition of it to
globalization, globalization is the interconnectedness of every country through
the movement of goods, services, etc. Therefore, there is a big difference
between these two words. Westernization is just a practices of Western
civilization that may not have a good impact but globalization is more likely has a
good effect on an economy.

2. Has COVID-19 pandemic killed globalization? Explain. (Cite one definition

of globalization to support your answer).

Yes, COVID-19 pandemic killed globalization. Globalization is the

interconnectedness and interdependence seen in 5 areas. One of it is the Ethnos
cope, because travel banned is lifted, the people were not able to trade and travel
since it is recognized as determinants of the spread of disease. Also, globalization
has concepts and part of it is the Liberalization which removes borders on the free
exchange to any country. Since the pandemic came, it create boundaries to every
nation. Therefore, the pandemic the world is dealing right now has a big impact to
globalization that it killed the freedom of people.

3. In what sense has the internet revolution flattened the world according to
Friedman?  Explain.

Friedman’s book, ‘The World is Flat’, he points out the reason why internet
revolution flattened the world. As the technology became more accessible and
cheaper, it makes every country a global neighbors which Friedman calls
‘Globalization 3.0’. As it is says, globalization is a process of the result of human
innovation and technological progress. Due to the advancement of technology,
the world flattened out. In the synchronous session, the professor has introduce
the globalization 1.0 and 2.0 wherein it is marked by countries and companies
globalizing respectively. Because of dynamism, it’s now software leading the
change, not the horsepower or hardware.

4. In what way has the Fall of the Berlin Wall contributed to the
intensification of economic globalization according to Friedman?

Friedman writes about the 10 Flatteners. The Fall of the Berlin Wall is
included here. It is said that this fall of Berlin Wall played an important role
especially in the economic freedom of the new world. First, because if the Berlin
Wall had remain standing, many emerging market giants would likely not remove
their economic borders. Second is because since the fall of the Berlin Wall,
globalization “has become the governing principle of commerce” (“The Berlin
Wall”, 2009). Thus, the Fall of the Berlin Wall contributed to the economic
globalization in a way that it turns the world from centrally planned economies to
democratic oriented government.

5. State and explain one core claim of globalism.

Friedman has 6 claims about globalism. One of it is that, “Globalization is

inevitable and irreversible” (Steger 2005, 18). Inevitable is a situation that is
unavoidable while Irreversible is the incapability of being changed. For me, it is
really an unavoidable since globalization is also the reason of growth of every
economy in the world. No matter how different your culture, your philosophy or
beliefs, it is the thing that the world cannot avoid. Like in the module, it says that
globalization is like a dictate of law of nature that will surely happen. Also, it is
irreversible, we cannot take back the time. What happen is what happen. No
matter what we do, we cannot change the fact that globalization is important in
the world for the benefits of especially of us. The world is indeed dynamic, same
goes with Globalization, it is a dynamic social process.
