Cultural Audit: Wipro has devoted special attention to align its culture with its vision and

values. Their transformation journey has had an impact in evolving its culture which has

always stayed true to their values and vision. The Spirit of Wipro is the core of Wipro. This

spirit proves as a guideline for the employees which then aligns them with the values.

Wipro is an organization that constantly thrives to provide best quality of solutions to their

clients through multiple innovation and world class workforce. This can only be achieved

through constant assistance provided to their clients by their productive and skilled

workforce. An audit of alignment of their vision, values and strategic plan is carried out

through conducting interviews with Wipro’s leaders.

Wipro’s vision to earn clients’ trust and provide best in class service and products has been

the bedrock since its inception. Wipro looks to provide inspiring environment, continuous

growth opportunities and innovation opportunities. This enables Wipro to stay true to their

vision and build a culture of progress. Wipro looks to provide work life balance and new

career avenues thus believing in the fact that the growth of the employees will result in

growth of the organization. Wipro’s belief is that they can achieve their vision only through

business efficiency and expertise of employees and innovation.

In line with their vision, Wipro aims to develop leadership capabilities of employees in every

field. Transparency in the environment makes the employees align the culture to the vision of

the company to maximize their clients’ business by providing best solutions.

Emphasis is also laid on aligning culture with the values as this will lead to the desired end

result. In 2017, Wipro launched Spirit of Wipro which aimed to set the culture according to
the values of the company. The first value is to be passionate about clients’ success. Being a

service-oriented company, it becomes important to ensure client success as this leads to client

retention and also greater business opportunity for Wipro. Understanding of the employees

that clients’ work is more than the job creates a culture to add value to client business. Clients

value Wipro because they not just get best solutions, but Wipro ensures that they go a step

beyond and act as stakeholders in client’s success. This creates a relationship between the

organization and the clients which stand the test of times. This relationship exists because the

culture of the teams at Wipro is such that the work is done collaboratively.

The second value of being global and responsible holds significance as Wipro started as a

local company but it grew with every opportunity it got. The growth of IT has led to Wipro

being truly global and this has also brought in a need for being responsible. Wipro has

ensured they act responsibly as there is need to build and sustain their image of a company

sensitive to the society. Wipro ensures the employees are involved in Corporate Social

Responsibility and the best example is the topmost management level where Azim Premji

leads by example. Azim Premji has done highest philanthropic contribution in the last year

and this was way ahead of the next in line.

Third value of treating each person with respect becomes important as well as very difficult

to ensure in a huge organization with 200,000+ employees. Thus, the culture flows from the

top management of treating everyone with respect which flows done till the last level of the

organization. The managers look to encourage new perspectives and treat everyone

individually. Managers also look to constantly upskill their team members to increase their

contribution.

The last value of unyielding integrity in everything Wipro does is very important. Integrity is

the bedrock of the Spirit of Wipro culture and the harmony between the two provides
direction for the employees. This has been observed even in the work from home model

before which all companies believed that it is necessary for the manager to constantly look

what their employees are doing but in the pandemic the employees of Wipro showcased

integrity by first adapting to the challenge and then providing solutions to them.

The strategic vision has also made sure that it is in line with the culture of the organization

because the management realized that it can bring benefits only if the culture is right which

can happen only if there is support of the employees.

Effect of Pandemic on the culture of organization:

The pandemic has totally changed the work culture, and associations across the world are

rethinking recently held ideas about collaboration, culture, and building social capital, as

indicated by Wipro’s leaders.

As per the leaders, technology has emerged as the most significant element of work during

the pandemic and employees and work culture has been aligned as per the technological

innovations coming up each and every day.

There is a lot of flexibility that has been adapted in the work environment along with some

extra time that has been allowed to employees due to a cut in time of commute along with

various other activities and challenges at office. This had allowed employees to take out time

to upgrade their skills and be more competent in the work environment.

The pandemic has ensured that remote work can also be productive as time has gradually

passed. The teams have figured out ways in which the work can be collaborated easily within

them and has invoked a sense of personal connectivity since most of them have been working

from home.
Leaders too have adapted to understand and implement a culture where work-life balance is

maintained in the lives of employees since it is very integral part of an employee who is

working from home. The initial challenges have been recovered and employees are much

more focused on their work than they ever were.

There has been an introduction of technology at each and every level, from the talent

management to retirement of employees along with personalized services to the employees

facing issues.

The worst phase of pandemic has also strengthened the relation between organization and

employees since the organization has been widely successful in assisting its employees in the

period of emergency and need. The organization had provided continuous financial and

medical assistance to the employees thus making them feel connected to the organization.

Post that phase, a spike in employee’s motivation was clearly visible.

The leaders have been trying now to empower the people of organization to prosper in a

hybrid environment and invoke a good balance between the productivity and adaptability of

employees and encouraging inclusion through the organization culture playing a key role

since the organization is people oriented.

The challenges that were majorly faced by the leaders were to frame a positive and optimistic

portrayal around the future of work and making the employees adapt it and foresee it as the

upcoming revolution in the IT industry where most of the work can be done remotely.

Moreover, they also faced some challenges in making the employees understand the

importance of work life balance and not taking too much mental pressure. For this, the

leaders encouraged employees to take leaves even when they are working from home for

some mental rejuvenation.

Cultural audit based upon secondary data:

Based upon reviews available on various review websites like ambitionbox.com and

indeed.com, it can be inferred that Wipro has a great organizational culture in terms of

inclusivity and learning opportunities along with communication from the leaders. But

various reviews have reflected a problem in the organization which is poor work-life balance.

The working hours at Wipro are 9 hours per day including break which is more than the

government norms. 1 out of every 5 employees posted a review about reducing the log in and

log out time at the organization. Moreover, employees have mentioned a shortage of

workforce in few projects which makes other team members to stretch their work timings

even in the virtual mode till up to 12+ ours in few instances.

A lot of employees also write about the lack of recognition even after their exemplary

contribution to the projects. Apart from the secondary sources, this review is also collected

from few entry level employees who have revealed that their contributions go unnoticed, or

they are not provided the due credits and appraisal as per their contributions to the project.

Wipro receives a rating of 3.1 in compensation and 3.4 in work life balance at a work place

review website through 38,000+ reviewers which clearly reflects that the organization is

lacking in identifying the efforts of employees and compensating them accordingly along

with misaligned work life balance even in virtual mode of working.

Problem Statement:

As per the information collected through primary and secondary sources, Wipro as

organization has been able to keep with continuous technological advancements through

constant upskilling of employees and inclusive and motivational leadership formats. But the

organization lacks in providing a good work-life balance to employees due to several factors
which might take a toll upon their mental health and thus affect their productivity. Along with

this, The organization also lacks proper compensatory mechanisms for employee

performance and a lack of acknowledgement which demotivates the employees to think out

of the box and contribute. Based upon the audit, the problems and opportunities that are

identified within the culture of organization are:

 To ensure adequate work-life balance of employees by identifying the amount of time

they are investing along with the appropriate amount of workforce required in each

project to reduce workload

 To introduce transparent appraisal mechanism that acknowledges the contributions of

employees along with constant feedbacks upon the acknowledgement of their efforts

 To simplify the levels of bureaucracy within the organization for better

synchronization among senior management officials
