Occupancy Monitoring System

There has been a dramatic change in the workplace in the post-COVID world. Work from Home (WFH) has become
the new normal. Technology solutions have made WFH as effective as Work from Office (WFO) and in some cases
even better. As a result, many companies are making WFH as a permanent arrangement with employees having to
go to the office only when essential.

Corporate real estate is expensive, and it is a significant portion of the cost base of most companies. There is now an
opportunity to consolidate office space and free up under-utilised or unused space to realise cost savings. Decisions
such as these need to be data-driven and that is one area where occupancy monitoring systems come into play.
Apart from efficient space utilization, occupancy monitoring systems also help in other use cases, for example, better
energy management - heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) through temperature sensors, gas, lighting,
smoke detectors, air quality monitoring through optical particle counter sensors, optimal use of janitorial staff and
improved safety standards with the help of occupancy patterns and usage statistics. With Internet of Things (IoT)
based sensors it is possible to obtain accurate occupancy data without compromising on user privacy.

We provide a full range of occupancy monitoring solutions and space utilization technology solutions including Door
Sensors, Room Occupancy Sensors, Beacon Scanners, RF sensors for in/out traffic monitoring and open area traffic
monitoring in cubicles, office rooms, conference rooms, phone booths, lobby areas, gymnasiums, toilets/restrooms in
office buildings. Other than office buildings, our solutions are deployed in airports, hospitals, sports complexes,
shopping malls etc. where we can combine the data from sensors deployed by us with external data like flight arrivals
and departures to predict cleaning requirements. They are also known as monitoring systems in general or more
specifically as restroom monitoring systems or occupancy monitoring solutions depending on the purpose for which
they are used.

Door Sensors
In janitorial applications, the Zan Door Sensor counts the number of times the door is opened/closed. In conjunction
with the data from the rest of our sensors in the restroom, our algorithm calculates overall traffic flow. The sensor is a
magnetic contact switch, with one half mounted on the door, and the other half mounted on the door frame. The
sensor connects to a device that communicates with a gateway using Bluetooth Low Energy space utilization
technology.

Room Occupancy Sensors

ZAN room occupancy sensor uses Time of Flight (ToF) technology to detect the number of people walking in/out
through the door. The IR sensing direction device will count the people walking in and walking out. The sensor is
typically installed in the ceiling and it can detect objects up to 3 meter distance. The sensor continuously monitors the
traffic and communicates with a gateway using Bluetooth Low Energy technology.

Beacon Scanners
Beacons are bluetooth devices that constantly emit signals that can get picked up by bluetooth enabled devices like
mobile phones. Beacon scanners enable tracking of janitorial staff and their check-in time, check-out time within the
specified area. This can help the facilities managers or building managers to track the movement of janitorial staff and
the time that they spend in each facility area. Beacon Scanners can also serve as toilet cleanliness monitoring
systems when they are installed in restrooms to track the movement of janitors.
Zan-in Traffic Monitoring
ZAN-In Traffic monitoring is a people count sensor which uses next generation technology, it has a groundbreaking
radar system which provides highly accurate position data. The sensor tracks people walking in and out of predefined
areas, maintains privacy – no cameraand operates in zero light environments. The sensor can be fitted above the
false ceiling, the output of the sensor is in point cloud format consisting of X, Y and Z coordinates of the identified
objects. Zan-in Traffic monitoring can also be used as a toilet cleanliness monitoring system by tracking the number of
persons using the toilet during any given time period.

Zanwave Open Area Traffic Monitoring

Zanwave Open Area Traffic uses the same sensor as Zan-In traffic but the deployment is different. While Zan-In
traffic focuses on entry and exit within the field of view, Open Area Traffic provides a lot more data by combining the
traffic flow data with data gathered from all other sources to show usage pattern, usage statistics, peak usage, non-
peak usage, predicted traffic, overcrowding, social distancing, cleaning requirements, user satisfaction etc. to
optimise space management decisions.

All data traffic between sensors and gateways is encrypted using 128-bit AES encryption even though we do not
collect private/sensitive data through any of our solutions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is occupancy monitoring?

Occupancy monitoring is a combination of target object detection, target object counting, movement tracking and
activity tracking. Target object in our case refers to people and therefore occupancy monitoring in our context is about
people detection, people counting, people movement and the activity that they are involved in (to a small extent).

How do monitoring systems track room occupancy?

Room occupancy is tracked with the help of IoT sensors which are placed at multiple locations within the facility area.

What is space utilisation or occupancy data?

Space utilization refers to usage of each type of area (cubicle, office room, conference room, lounge area, parking
area etc.). It can provide data on how often each area is used, when it is used, for how long it is used and how many
people are there vis-a-vis full capacity at any point of time in case of common areas.

Why is space utilization important?

Space utilisation data helps in identifying opportunities for optimisation, avoiding wastage, maintaining social
distancing and improving hygiene standards. Space utilization tracking is becoming critical now as many
organizations are moving to dynamic seating arrangements.

What is an occupancy monitoring system or occupancy monitoring

solution?
Occupancy monitoring system is a system that uses occupancy monitoring sensors deployed at different parts of an
area being monitored to detect people count, people movement, duration and other statistical information. The
sensors send real-time data to a central management dashboard. The dashboard is cloud-based and can be
accessed at any time, from any connected device. It can also be configured to send instant alerts to the building
manager if specific activity takes place (e.g. flooding in the toilet) or if a planned activity does not take place (e.g.
janitor does not perform cleaning at the scheduled time or the number of people in an area crosses the COVID
threshold).

What is a restroom monitoring system?

A restroom monitoring system / toilet cleanliness monitoring system can be an occupancy monitoring system for a
restroom, it can be a monitoring system for tracking the level of consumables or cleanliness of the restroom or a
space utilization technology solution designed for restrooms.
