Background:
Linux is an open-source operating system that was released in 1991 and introduced to function
on computers. As technology advanced, its’ also become useful on other devices such as cellular
phones, cars, servers, and many more. Since the launch of Linux, it increasingly became one of
the more common OSes to use as it is what most end-users were familiar with, and it being open-
source attracted many people to it.
Major Features:
The Linux operating system offers a variety of considerable features for consumers to work with.
Some of these features include portability, application support, security, GUI and CLI, multiuser
capability, file system, etc. With that being said, it provides options for users to choose from
according to their needs.
Advantages of Linux OS:
Unlike the other common operating systems, Linux is free and an open-source software –
meaning it can be installed to any computer system. Additionally, the security is much stronger
than its’ competitors and have no need to activate or download antivirus tools. It is also rare that
the application crashes. Considering this, hackers seldom target the Linux system.
Expansion and Growth:
When Linux was initially released, it was none other than an experiment. Developers working
alongside of the project did not expect for it to be widely used upon release. There were plans to
make modifications to the program first before being rolled out into a production environment.
Although it had been the only open-source operating system in the industry at the time, there
were few people that believed in application’s potential. Fortunately, the OS beat the odds and
continues to be in demand as a mainstay system.
